4.5/5⭐️

I like this series more and more the further I get into it.

This one involves multiple cases, multiple locales and some truths and lies that Maisie struggles with, both professionally and personally. Each case had something to say and add to the whole, and I found it interesting to watch Maisie as she intuitively navigated some hard/complicated storylines.

Wonderful addition to the series.

From the moment I met the character of Maisie Dobbs, I loved her and couldn't wait to see her succeed in the opening of her very own office on Warren Street, "M. Dobbs, Trade and Personal Investigations." I love her grit, determination, and kind manner to all, regardless of socio-economic differences. I also enjoy reading the different reactions to one of Maisie's trademark styles of talking to everyone quietly and respectfully without need to raise her voice or yell to garner attention.

New cases for investigation lead Maisie to confront memories of her own service as a nurse in WWI serving in France, and now it appears the cases cannot be solved without a physical return to France as well. Can Maisie solve the cases without endangering her own physical and mental health?

This novel is a poignant reminder that anyone who serves on the front lines of war may suffer from PTSD for years after the service they have given to their country. We cannot minimize this suffering. We should not forget that all who suffer may look fine "on the outside," but "on the inside," their pain is indescribable, and that's why so many remain silent and don't even try to explain what they feel and what they are going through. Let us not ignore their pain. Let us not forget they suffer today because "yesterday" their service was on behalf of all of us.

Maisie Dobbs has become one of my favorite sleuths, and I can't wait to read more of this series!

I just love this series SO much. Maisie is a lot more vulnerable in this one, she has to revisit some terrible scenes & settings in this story and we get to see how she deals with that. The only thing I didn’t love about this is hinted in the title of the book. Were the lies that Maisie had to tell “pardonable”? I’m not sure. I was torn. So 4 stars for the overall story but I did question some of the choices made.

I am already a huge fan of the Maise Dobbs' series, but this 3rd book was absolutely perfect. The narrator was excellent and pleasing to listen to throughout.

This book has so many mysteries with links to each other that hte reader is "holding on for dear life" until the conclusion. I wasn't able to guess what would happen next - so had to keep listening!

I love the depth of Maisie's character. She is never silly or neglectful with her work or her personal life. Her past experiences of loss make her a character whom most readers will relate to at least on some levels.

In this 3rd book, Maisie must face her past nightmares from the war by traveling back to France as part of her investigations. This is a heart-wrenching trip for her, but she presses on towards truth. She is also being pursued by person or persons who want to see her dead.

Be prepared readers for an emotional conclusion to this book. I cried unashamedly as the story ended. Maybe you will too!

Brilliant writing by Jacqueline Winspear. I immediatley purchased the 4th audio book and am going to being listening now!

Wonderfully written historical mystery set in 1930's England and France. I checked my shelves and see that I read #1 & #2 back in 2014. Only reason it's taken so long to get back to this series is because of all the recommendations here at Goodreads!

No spoilers but this technically is not a crime mystery. Maisie does have 3 interconnected cases that she is investigating with the help of her loyal assistant, Billy Beale. Am becoming very attached to Billy. Two of the cases are connected to each other and Maisie must travel to France to find their "truths". There she must deal with tormented memories of serving in France as a nurse on the front lines of WWI.

Hope to read more in this series soon!

The third Maisie Dobbs mystery has Maisie assigned to discover if a young girl sold into prostitution really killed her pimp, if a young airman declared dead in WWI is really dead, and the circumstances surrounding the death of a friend;s brother, also in the war. It forces Maisie to return to France--she hasn't been there since the war and her own devastating injury--to face her own ghosts with mixed results, and to further explore the nature of the ghosts who watch over her. She also learns things about an old friend and an old enemy.

I'm really enjoying this series so far. I skipped the second book because the subject of this one appealed to me more, but now I'm backing up to read it.

Wow! This is the game changer, exactly when I knew I could love and binge this series. Taking place not long after WWI, but close enough to WWII looming, it has so much emotion and depth to all the stories and characters. I cannot wait to see where it goes from here.

Also, this is the first audio with Orlagh Cassidy narrating this series, and I am so glad she is the narrator going forward. She brought these characters to life. I looked for every opportunity to listen to this book.

Somehow I can't get sucked in by Maisie Dobbs, despite my wanting to because of the period settings for the mysteries.

This third one has a weary plot that rambles disjointedly on and then produces something extra that I can't get to grips with at the end. All in all a disappointment. I might just try another at a later date; there again, I might not!

Ok, I really tried, but my woo-woo capacity was exceeded by a sizeable margin. In fact I think this book broke my woo-woo detector. I know exactly when it happened, ...in the tube station scene with the physical manifestation of her departed-but-not-dead almost fiancée shouting a precisely timed warning of her impending death by train. Enough.

If her business card said 'psychic and investigator' then at least we'd have a realm in which to place this, but as it stands her 'psychologist' credentials are severely lacking, and not even remotely convincing.

Since I'm not going to pick up the next one, let alone the next 10 in this series, I can happily say to the author, and to anyone else who is reading this. Show don't tell! Stop belabouring 'important plot points' (TM). It makes it aggravating for the reader. Stop hiding the important information behind the 'fade to black' mechanism, and stop telling us how amazing Maisie is and then have her do something foolish over and over again.

I do hope these books getting better as the series progresses, for those who like the character, but I'm not going to make that trip myself. As Maisie is well aware (or at least she should be), life is just too short.

The mystery was interesting but the aspect of these books that keeps me coming back is seeing the impact of trauma in Maisie’s life and her response to that trauma.

This is the third in the Maisie Dobbs series, which I am enjoying. They are a light and easy read, which is sometimes just what my mind needs!! I'm not overly interested in the Eastern mystical elements of Maisie Dobbs novels, but I enjoy reading about the inter-World-War period and it's always nice to read a book with a strong female main character - although Maisie is not as strong in this one, since she has to deal with some demons from the past which leave her rather vulnerable.
