This is an incredibly dense book. Oversized and heavy, it contains an unbelievable amount of material. The timeline format adds tremendous depth to the book, as it contains a wide range of information that was happening in society at the time. Although there is lots of information presented, there isn't anything of profound depth - most of the segments are a paragraph or so. Tons of photos of the band and those associated with them. Highly recommended for fans of the band.

Another amazing look at the grateful dead in "coffee table" book style. Great pics (many new and not seen before) and interesting quotes and info. Get it, put on some of your favourite vintage dead and go for a trip...

I read every word of this book little by little over the course of a year. I guess you could say I'm obsessed, but it was my equivalent of reading an encyclopedia.

Grateful Dead: The Illustrated Trip by Robert Hunter et al (DK Publishing 2003)(782.42166) is by far the biggest and most thorough Dead book of them all. Best of all, I just ordered it on Amazon in hardback in used condition for $3.69! My rating: 7.5/10, finished 7/22/11.
