Dominion is a well written, fast paced murder mystery revolving around a black newspaper columnist and a white detective. The book is full of detailed and engrossing thoughts and feelings blacks experience on a daily basis and gives information and perspective about the history of slavery and racism in the United States. The intense emotions of an angry black man are exposed throughout. In addition there are many intriguing insights into police, detectives, teenage gangs, and the roadblocks to solving crimes. As always, Randy Alcorn includes a thrilling view of heaven. I don’t usually read novels or mysteries but on this one I took notes. Dominion is a valuable book!

April 23: Again, this author's content, as in his other book I read, is trite, with a low-level vocabulary & rife with hackneyed or mismatched analogies. I'm on p.142 & not sure I can continue with the negative racial diatribes from the bitter protagonist. After looking at a couple of other reviews on Goodreads i see i am not alone in this observation. I may not finish it. I may pick it up again & skim before book club meets to discuss it in June. The action picked up a bit from p.25-140, but is heading downhill again.
May 6: Well. I finished, & the pace did pick up, but the author continued to try to cover every imaginable social, political & spiritual issue from a racial perspective. His "glimpses into heaven" are sweet, interesting, & emotional, but I'm not sure they are always scriptural. Would have appreciated some verse documentation; the "other planets" idea made me think of a prominent cult belief.
The conclusion is pretty far fetched, but yet surprisingly somewhat satisfying. I appreciated his call to repentance for ALL races regarding the sad divisions in the church.
My particular edition had a chapter from the next in his series, which I skimmed; I will NOT be reading it! Pretty scattered & littered with silly details, as if he tries to "pad" it to be longer.

I learned a lot from this book. It could have been condensed into two books. A lot of history on racism, gangs in Portland, where I lived in the 60s. It was sometimes difficult to stay focused as the theme bounced back and forth between Heaven and earth. Still a very interesting read but enjoyed his other books more.

I really don't know how to review this book properly. So I will just suffice it to say it was a good book but parts did bother me.

There are three interwoven themes in this book: Salvation through Christ, race issues, and who killed Clarence's sister and niece? Excellent writing. Salvation and race were both thought provoking and the mystery kept me entertained and guessing.

I rated this a lowly two for these reasons: 1) The murder mystery was engaging but went very slowly and then came to an abrupt., 2) The book was loaded with social commentary that wasn't really part of the story., 3) The author's views on liberals (via his characters) was not entirely accurate., and 4) The scenes taking place in heaven were unrelated to the story and annoying and I skipped over those.

I really enjoy Randy Alcorn's books and especially his portrayals of heaven and even those of hell which are frightening to say the least.
However this book is all about racial tension, gangs, drugs and as someone else said 'it is heavy with racial conversations and slow on the story line' which sums it up for me.
Towards the end when it is time to wrap the story, the plot moves along at a cracking pace but earlier it is VERY slow with loads of conversations about racial issues both now and back into slavery. A little less of this would have worked well for me. There is a lot to say but you don't need to try and say all of it in one novel. There are times too when the American culture and insight is overwhelming for non Americans.
Having said all that the characters are well portrayed, the gang talk is very well researched (I assume) and the plot is plausible if rather slow going at times. However I would take issue about how evidence and confession are gathered. Do cops really only lie through clever little questions to trick suspects to get confessions? Too often also evidence was gathered in a rather suspect manner.
Nevertheless it is a great story, very well researched and recommended.

Excellent book that gives a peak into how racism affects people.

I enjoyed the mystery and all the thoughts and perspectives sparked by the depictions of heaven. He also explores the race issues from many different perspectives of his different characters. Great to think deeply about this complex, multifaceted issue through the eyes and experiences of many of the characters

For as much as I liked deadline, I had a hard time with this book. I found some parts excellent and some parts that troubled me...
