The reason why many people love Jeffrey Archer is that his story always has life in it and is heartwarming and this book is no exception. He takes us through the lives of Charlie Trumper, Becky, Daphne, Daniel Trumper and their rivalry against Guy & Mrs Trumper. Reading this book gave me a feeling of living Charlie's life for 60 years. The great thing is that as a reader we know the suspense and only the characters are searching for answers but still makes it an interesting read.
If you like Jeffrey Archer's novels, then there is only very little chance for you to be disappointed.

Reading this book again was very mellowing. It gave me a glimpse into how a board of directors behaves. But it's so much more than that.

The characters each always said the right things at the right time, by that meaning of course the baddies too.

Jeffrey Archer was at his zenith, and it shows. He has the tendency, in his other books, to underrepresent women, but not here. A very satisfactory read, and one that I wouldn't mind repeating for a third time.

I’m quite a fan of Archer’s adult fairy tales - stories which always work out happily in the end - and this one, my first in a number of years, was a pleasure. It was also the first ‘human-read’ audio book I have ever listened to. Good job!

I really enjoyed this story! Charlie Trumper starts as a seller of vegetables and fruits on the streets of London. How he gets from there to WW 1 to working for Winston Churchill during WW 2 to running a multi million dollar store is all fascinating and entertaining. He has evil to overcome and he manages well.

If you enjoyed The Clifton Chronicles, then I would highly recommend this book.

This is a rags-to-riches tale of East End barrow-boys, supermarkets, boardroom politics, war and vegetables. If anyone had told me in advance I would really like it I would have laughed, but looking back I know I was gripped by it. It is full of twists and turns, cliffhangers and things that seem to mean one thing and actually mean another.

I started reading this book as I got 4 stars on Goodreads and I'll admit : I just couldn't finish it. The characters were very predictable: Charlie Trumper, the hero and saviour of the day, Becky the prim prom ambitious young girl, Colonel Hamilton the cautious friend and advisor and Daphne the fun loving wealthy best friend. They were all so typical that I was bored of them all. I got bored of Charlie always cutting a good deal on every shop in the block. Real life doesn't work that way. I expected the main protagonist to struggle as I thought that's what this book was about.

Couldn't read beyond 250 pages. This book should be avoided. Definitely a miss - Not a Goodread!

A long saga of a book telling the tale of Charlie Trumper who come from the East End, where he helps his grandad sell fruit and veg on his market barrow. Charlie has big dreams. The First World War comes along and scuppers his plans for a few years and Charlie meets the villain of the piece Guy Trentham. Guy is his commanding officer. There are downs and ups throughout the 60 odd years of the story and you get taken to the edge of disaster many times. An enjoyable tale for the most part.

It's funny how our tastes change, I think that many years ago I would have loved this book, but now I have to admit that halfway through I found myself skimming sections of it....something I very, very rarely do.
It was a good story, that of a poor east end London boy, instilled with an excellent work ethic by his Grandfather, and blessed with brains and ingenuity, who makes good despite bereavement, war, and many other trials and tribulations, including making an enemy determined to undermine and ruin everything he does.
I did enjoy the first half of this book, and because there were some interesting characters I wanted to find out what happened to them, but at times it was all just a little too good to be true.
There were some surprises, but the outcome of the various problems to beset the main character and his family became just too predictable.
