If you need a dose of boring pretentious literature, ala Ulysses, read this. Otherwise, toss this artsy critical darling to the side and find something enjoyable to read.
A nice blend of American history and fascinating characters with interesting storylines. Lots of humor and clever dialogue. Interesting literary techniques, especially referencing newspaper articles and popular songs. The multiplicity of voices is redolent of Whitman.
What an outstanding achievement this first volume was and I can only imagine what two and three bring us. I’ll have a lot more to say after all 3. Give me like a week. Stay tuned.
