Irving is a magical writer but there is an obvious quirkiness to nearly all of his stories that makes me think "Ew did he have to go there". In this story there is the incestual relationship between John and Frannie that is a central point to the story but a little hard to stomach.
I did not totally get the Susie the bear suit character but the other characters are all well drawn. All of the dysfunctional children and the odd (but harmless) father reminded me of the film Royal Tennenbaums, a film I enjoyed by the way.
I have not seen the film version of The Hotel New Hampshire but I am convinced that the novel would be better. Irving's appeal for me is his fluid and descriptive writing and exceptionally timed pacing and not his quirkiness.
Irving just seems to know when the reader is getting bored, a skill that I wish more novelists would hone.
