Interesting essays on the invention of tradition in, among others, Scotland and Wales, India and Africa. I'm a bit at a loss with Hobsbawm's own essay at the end of the collection. It lacks clarity i'm afraid.
I also wished it would look a bit further than the Commonwealth experience. Traditions in France, England properly, Germany and the USA are only glanced at sideways.

Todos ellos demuestran cómo lo que llamamos tradición no es algo inmutable que cambia solamente cuando una tradición exterior se impone, sino que en cada país y cultura se va modificando según circunstancias políticas, económicas y sociales, a veces de forma espontánea, otras por intereses de las clases o países dominantes. Eso nos hace reflexionar sobre las identidades nacionalistas, muchas veces construidas o inventadas en fechas no muy lejanas de forma interesada.

Essays on specific national myths that undergird popular nationalisms in Europe today. Mostly interesting and occasionally dull, depending upon the essay.

Published in 1992 but still completely valid, it reviews different ceremonies and traditions which are considered to come from ancient times when in fact they were "invented" in the 19th century and the first part of the 20th century (British monarchy ceremonies, for example, but also national festivals such as Bastille Day or Columbus Day). These inventions made the public believe in historical continuity of different institutions while legitimising their existence.

The Taylor essay on Scotland and the introduction are both essential reading.

Saggio seminale di storia culturale, risulta accessibile come un'equazione differenziale spuria e gestibile come un gatto con la rogna, specialmente nel suo nucleo, il saggio di Hobsbawm che (paradossalmente) è posto in fondo al testo - ma, si sa, venenum in cauda.

Al di là della oggettiva difficoltà di ogni saggio presente, un po' per ignoranza del periodo o della locazione storica (India, Africa coloniale), un po' perché parla di tradizioni lontane dalla mia sensibilità (tweed, plaid scozzesi), risulta un testo profondo ed equilibrato, ricco di spunti notevoli ed estremamente critici di alcuni dei caposaldi della storiografia inglese, e non solo, del xx secolo: rifiuto di teleologie, descrizione densa, caratteri storici integrati in un'antropologia profonda.

El primer capítulo es muy bueno, luego ya me resultó menos interesante

Siempre es un gusto leer a Hobsbawm y más si el tema trata de tradiciones. En 8 capítulos se condensan diferentes invenciones de los británicos del XIX, tanto de las islas como de las colonias (sin olvidar a la monarquía). A pesar de que ya estaba al tanto de algunas de las cosas que se mencionan en el libro, no he podido sino sorprenderme cuando este me ha descubierto otras (como las invenciones nacionalistas escocesas).
Un libro muy recomendable para todo aquel que esté interesado no solo en el gran invento de la tradición, sino también en nacionalismos, el Reino Unido decimonónico y, en general, la forma de proceder de los estados occidentales en el XIX.
La única pega que le encuentro, y no sé si es cosa de la traducción o también ocurre en la versión inglesa, es la construcción de algunos párrafos. Parece que una oración diga una cosa y la siguiente niegue la anterior. Es un tanto confuso y obliga a leer varias veces el mismo texto para asegurarse de que se ha entendido lo que ponía.

Lots of factual tidbits and asides on the invention of tradition in Great Britain and it's prior colonies. However, with the countless books to be read in a lifetime, I can't warrant sitting through 50 pages on the details of the preparation for a Victorian Durbar ceremony. Hobsbawm's entries were solid though.

A hugely influential book of historiography in which Hobsbawm et al deconstruct the process by which a nation claims itself to be older than it really is, inventing its own traditions to strengthen its image of national identity and historical/political continuity. Fascinating, enlightening and important.
