Tears of the Giraffe by Alexander McCall Smith was a short, delightful read. The characters are complex, well developed and interesting. I especially enjoyed the strong, independent female character. Descriptions about Africa were fascinating. Several references to the giraffe were thought provoking. The giraffe gives its tears to the women and they weave them into the basket. We can all give something and the giraffe has only its tears to give.
Looking forward to reading more in this series.

The story picks up right where The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency left off: Mma. Ramotswe accepting MR J.L.B. Matekoni's marriage proposal. So let the wedding preparations begin. If you're expecting some sort of tulle festival, flowers, endless cake recipes and dress rehearsals... choose a different book.

As our protagonists are mature adults, they start thinking along the very sensible topics of where to live, how to politely get rid of Mr. Matekoni's lazy cleaning lady, and as a grand finale adopting two children.
For those of you who've enjoyed the detective stories from the previous book, you get two more in the current book. A rather meager number in comparison, but posing very interesting dilemmas.

On the surface, this appears to be an excellent book. Mma Makutsi, the secretary, gets her big break investigating a possibly unfaithful wife. Mr. Matekoni gets roped into adopting two Basarwa children, while Mma Ramotswe is busy rearranging her life to suit that of a married woman.

There was nothing boring in the story, however there was also nothing particularly exciting either. The writing style is still very simple, just like people's thought patterns. The vast majority of people seem to have the mental maturity of a 5th grader. Isn't that a rather insulting portrayal of these people?

The other issue that bothered me a lot, was Mr. JLB Matekoni's doormat impressions. He's supposedly a good person, but really everyone manages to guilt-trip him into one thing or another. I get that he's better than a two-timing scoundrel, but a bit of backbone wouldn't hurt him.

3/5 stars because it (still) shows a lot of potential, but the execution yet again falls short.

I am surprised about this series. I was very iffy when I picked up the first book, which was loaned to me by a family member, but I was hooked. This second book was difficult to put down and I read it in 2 days. I'm anxious to move on with the #1 Ladies.

A perfect read while home sick with a cold - a cozy mystery for a day spent hunkered down, in need of something light and comforting. Love the characters, the Botswana setting and the cultural details.

What a lovely, refreshing story. This is a continuation of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Now Precious is engaged to a mechanic who owns his own garage. She has now promoted her secretary to assistant detective and she is doing some great work on her own.

There are also some new additions to the family that are sweet and charming.

As usual, a wonderful read with many human, heartwarming stories.

There weren't as many mysteries as the first and those that were there were not as interesting. The characters remained charming and interesting, though, so overall this was a pleasant read.

This story took me deeper into the traditions of Botswana and their many gentle people, and gave some insight into the broader African conflicts - but mostly it was a wonderful story of Mma Ramotswe and her Detective Agency. The result of the cases that Mma Ramotswe takes on very often end up helping others in a very sensible way, and in the midst of her investigations we are also pulled in to her lovely life, where she is engaged to a very kind man who has surprisingly taken in two orphan children. The cases are interesting, the family life is interesting, and the escapades are fun as well – with a tiny suspicion of possible danger thrown in for some more spice.
A very fun fast read.
