Another sweet tale. I do enjoy reading these in between the thrillers that I prefer. Its nice to take a break and read about little issues solved by the 2 Mma's in Botswana. This one is one of the more interesting ones and did keep me entertained.

I really liked this book. All the problems were solved. This is the best out of the first 6 of the series.

What can I say! Mma Ramotswe is everything that is right in the world!
After waiting for a long long time, Note finally made an appearance, and needless to say, I hated him with all my might, and not just because of the complete jerk that he is, but also because the kind of power he had over Mma Precious.

Looking forward to Mma Makutsi's wedding now!
Definitely recommended, this and the entire series!

P.S. McCall Smith is coming for this years JLF and I cannot go and I can't tell you how sad that has made me. I am trying not to think about it, but it sucks!

These are cozy little reads that are really more about the characters' relationships to each other than about any mysteries taken on by the detective agency. I recently saw a documentary about Alexander McCall Smith. He confesses that he wants to present books about Africa that are not tragedies. He sets the pace slowly (as per the "cozy mystery" genre conventions). He likes to imagine himself as grounded and wise as Mma Ramotswe. He also explains how he travels from Scotland back to Botwana once a year to conduct research for each subsequent book in the series. These books are slow-paced, domestic, charming and educational. I am learning a bit about Botswana, which makes me feel less guilty about reading genre fiction.

The rating is because the writing isn’t anything spectacular and the plot lines are thin, but nonetheless I love this series and the reliability of the characters. It’s a gentle read that whisks me away to the warmth of Botswana, where making time to talk with friends in the shade and drinking a cup of bush tea are just as important as work.

"... for that is what redeems us, that is what makes our pain and sorrow bearable - this giving of love to others, this sharing of the heart."

A beloved new favorite of mine!

I have greatly enjoyed all the previous books, of course, but this one was truly remarkable.

The book introduces two new faces, which are Mr. Polopetsi and Phuti Radiphuti. Both of these men have proven themselves to be great additions to The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. My heart melted at the end for Phuti and Grace Makutsi. I'm so happy for them both!

I have heard such great things about Alexander McCall Smith books and had never read one.

I still haven't read one, well not fully as I started this one and just found it boring and annoying and not at all what I thought. I just couldn't continue reading it so I have put it away so that I can pass it on to someone who might enjoy it more than me!

4.5 I enjoy this series for the simplicity, human nature, kindness and gentle spirits of the main characters. This one was full of moral dilemmas that relate to everyday life.
It's also an escape from the real life of America in 2020. This book is quite far removed from this current reality, which I really need right now. I would love to take a break from everything going on and just be there.
I use the audio book version so I can multi task and enjoy the story.

After a few years break, I picked up the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Series with installment six In the Company of Cheerful Ladies. This reunion with Lady Detective Precious Ramotswe immediately brought me to the warm and famiiar characters stories that originally attracted me. This story is no less compelling, though it has that Botswana pace where everything takes the time it needs and one must just wait. As the story unfolds, we have apprentices acting up, a gambling financier to find, dances to be learned, a secret to keep and a tiny white van which may have come to its last drive. All is resolved and the reader travels on the story's journey like a rail passenger watching the scenic images from a large train window. The pictures are vivid and evocative. The narrative at once draws you in and allows you to imagine the sunlit vistas. I look forward to the next chance I have to sit with a cup of bush tea and the lady detectives.

Another wonderful time spent among the friends and business associates of the ladies of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. We also learn more about the employees and customers of the Tlockweng Road Speedy Motors.

Kirjasarjan sankarit kohtasivat monia onnellisia sattumia ja ongelmalliset tilanteet ratkesivat toivotusti. Hyvän mielen luettavaa tuttuun tapaan :) Parhaillaan Afrikassa kuvittelin itseni Zebra drivelle päästessäni näkemään livenä kirjassa usein vertauksissa käytetyt baobab puut.
