“People's lives are delicate. You cannot interfere with them without running the risk of changing them profoundly. A chance remark, a careless involvement, may make the difference between a life of happiness or one of sorrow."

There is an undeniable beauty when it comes to this series, and there is a delightful coziness to it overall.

I am still enjoying spending my time with Mma Ramotswe and friends in Botswana. The characters are all so beautiful and authentic and human, and that is one of the many things I love about The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. I also love learning more about the beautiful country that is Botswana.

Mma Ramotswe meets competition, Mma Makutsi meets romance and the apprentices of Mr J. L. B. Matekoni meets God.

Another wonderful look into Botswana life. Mma Ramotswe has such a wonderful philosophy, and her thoughts of Africa are truly divine. I can't express how much I enjoy these books!

More slow charm and gentle truth seeking from our friends at the #1 Ladies Detective Agency, who now have a competitor in the form of the Satisfaction Guaranteed Detective Agency (“Don’t take any chances! Entrust your inquiries to a MAN!”). A ten year old could see the competition isn’t going to be that stiff, but the lack of subtlety is one of the most delightful qualities of these books, partly because it reminds me that most people really aren’t that adept at hiding unpleasant traits, and partly because it gives Mma Ramatswe material for her commentaries on men.

This one has a couple of bittersweet storylines that pulled at my sympathies — the trusty assistant Mma Makutsi starts her own business and becomes involved in a bit of an intrigue, and Mma Ramatswe has a client who needs help rectifying a past sin. Mma Ramatswe doesn’t have murders to solve, but she does have to deal with other crimes and failings that must be put right, and this she does with compassion and principles.

It’s always soothing to return to the tidy world of Mma Precious Ramotswe and her detective agency in Gabrone, Botswana. In this fourth installment, Mma Ramotswe and her assistant Mma Makutsi must grapple with a rival detective agency and Mma Makutsi starts a side business, the eponymous typing school. The books can be a little conservative in their “Men are from Mars” attitudes at times, and the reader is never really in doubt that things won’t work out by the end, but in small doses, I don’t mind much.

This time I ready the first few chapters and then listened to the rest as narrated by Lisette Lecat, who did a phenomenal job.

I’m almost positive McCall placed himself in the story when Precious and Mrs. Moffat are looking at some pictures:

“And this person standing behind them? The man who is looking at the camera?”

That is somebody who comes to stay with us from time to time,” said Mrs. Moffat. “He writes books.”

My bookclub discovered The Number One Ladies Detective Agency in 2005, and we just loved it. A couple summers ago, I began a tradition of reading one book in the series during my annual beach vacation. This one is the fourth book, and I think it's the best since the original. The author is masterful at conveying a sense of charm without allow it to feel "precious" (no pun intended with regard to the lead character). I have never been to Botswana, but there is something about both the narrative and dialgoe that I am utterly convinced that it's an authentic treatment. The books feel light and airy when it comes to the "action," and yet have a depth and subtlety that is easy to overlook but feeds the literary soul. This one even had a "twist" that completely caught me off-guard and had me turning the pages with anxiety as to how things would turn out for the characters. If you haven't yet, give this series a try--and check out the HBO series, which is wonderful and completely faithful to the books (available on Netflix).

I cannot get enough from this series. It prompted us to actually go to Botswana. It is as fabulous as Smith describes it.

This book is simple in structure, which at first may make one think it is a children's or young adult book. In essence, it can be enjoyed by all age groups. It is culturally rich, bring the values and landscape so close to the reader's senses, you can see, feel, and admire the people of Botswana.

Fall in love with Botswana.

To thoroughly enjoy the book, start with The Number One Ladies Detective Agency, going chronologically to truly follow the story as the characters lives unfold.

Love reading this cosy little series but it does make me laugh how everything always comes together in the last 20 pages or so!

This was my first time reading an Alexander McCall Smith novel, on recommendation from my persistent mother. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. He is a champion at writing women, honestly, all the women in this novel were astounding and I loved them all so much. A wonderful little cute story with interesting characters, a very simple and easy but enjoyable read. I will definitely pursue more of his novels.

I think the charm of these books are the characters and to follow them throughout. I can't say there's much investigating work. I wish it was more eventful and exciting.
If you like these series, you should read Amelia Peabody series that's set in Egypt. I think that one has very endearing characters and more intrigue.
