In the eighth main installment of author Kathryn Lasky’s Guardians of Ga’Hoole saga, the owl Nyroc will abandon his name, parentage, and inheritance to seek a holy relic from the Beyond the Beyond in order to prove there is good within him and bid farewell to his tainted lineage. In exile from the Pure Ones, he flies with the stigma that he is the son of Kludd and Nyra, who sends phantasmal entities to try and lure him back into her ranks. He further seeks the Great Ga’Hoole tree and his uncle Soren, although he knows he can’t approach it given the rumors of evil about him.
The prologue features Nyroc announcing that he has free will, with the main chapters centered on him still not being at peace, and he has a lead, the name of Otulissa. He befriends eagles and ultimately alters his identity from Nyroc to Coryn, accomplishing good deeds such as rescuing an owl family’s missing egg. He further encounters wolves, becoming friends with one named Hamish, and overall, this entry is largely on par with its predecessors, not necessarily a bad thing, although there are occasional headscratchers such as the term Lochinvyrr. Even so, those that liked prior books will very likely enjoy this one.
After reading 8 Ga'Hoole books pretty much in a row, I've decided to leave off here--besides, the opening pages of the next book in the series, The First Collier, were poorly written. Bummer, considering how much better The Hatchling and The Outcast were.
After Nyroc escapes his mother, he goes to live in the beyond the beyond. The residents (wolves and outcast owls) quickly realize that he is something special. Meanwhile, Otulissa is being haunted by a scroom who implores her to seek out a great owl in the beyond the beyond. Finally she does and finds that Nyroc (now called Coryn) is the great owl. She also recognizes that he has the makings of a good collier and briefly trains him. He becomes a very important owl who rose above evil.
I enjoyed hearing more of Nyroc's (Coryn's) story. I also was very excited to learn more about the Beyond The Beyond as I had been waiting to hear about it after looking at the map in the front of book 3! also I absolutely love the dire wolf clans! this is a great series and the next two books just arrived at home and I'm excited to read them!
Guardians of Ga'Hoole: The Outcast (Guardians of Ga'Hoole Book 8 ) Summary: Haunted by his past, hunted by the Pure Ones, Nyroc flies alone. He yearns to go to the Great Tree, where good and learned owls do great noble deeds, but he cannot. He is the son of Kludd and Nyra, sworn enemies of all Ga'Hoole stands for, feared and despised by everyone. But Nyroc has glimpsed hope -and a new destiny - in the flame over his father's very bones. In search of that destiny, he trains his gaze and beats his wings toward a dark, lawless place where desperate characters roam a barren landscape and fire splits the sky - Beyond the Beyond.
