While Stephanie still makes many stupid decisions, this installment was better than the first two. I could focus a little more on the story without constantly face-palming.
The story, however, was not without its cringe factor, which I discussed in the group with whom I'm buddy-reading the series. My comments:
I was surprised that no one, including possibly Janet Evanovich, realized this is technically a non-answer as Cubans also come in African flavors. But then I remembered the reaction of my high school best friend's mom (they are Cuban) when she learned that she had black members of the family. My best friend was like, of course we do, Mom, we are from the Caribbean!
I also stated:
I didn't find it malicious, just ignorant.
As a West Indian (I don't say the Caribbean because the Bahamas is technically in the Atlantic, not the Caribbean Sea), I find it painfully amusing how many, including other West Indians/Caribbeans, ignore that part of their heritage or are confused that it exists. I'm not saying that Ranger has African ancestors; I'm just saying it's not impossible.

Grandma M: Are you a Negro?
Ranger: Cuban
Grandma M: Too bad. It would have been something to tell the girls at the beauty parlor I had dinner with a Negro.
