While Stephanie still makes many stupid decisions, this installment was better than the first two. I could focus a little more on the story without constantly face-palming.

The story, however, was not without its cringe factor, which I discussed in the group with whom I'm buddy-reading the series. My comments:

Grandma M: Are you a Negro?
Ranger: Cuban
Grandma M: Too bad. It would have been something to tell the girls at the beauty parlor I had dinner with a Negro.

I was surprised that no one, including possibly  Janet Evanovich, realized this is technically a non-answer as Cubans also come in African flavors. But then I remembered the reaction of my high school best friend's mom (they are Cuban) when she learned that she had black members of the family. My best friend was like, of course we do, Mom, we are from the Caribbean!

I also stated:

I didn't find it malicious, just ignorant.

As a West Indian (I don't say the Caribbean because the Bahamas is technically in the Atlantic, not the Caribbean Sea), I find it painfully amusing how many, including other West Indians/Caribbeans, ignore that part of their heritage or are confused that it exists. I'm not saying that Ranger has African ancestors; I'm just saying it's not impossible.

Another awesome book! Grandma Mazur cracks me up, as well as a few other characters. I like how Ranger stays the mysterious character; it's fun trying to guess about him. And Stephanie ~ I guess you could say the Italian in her shines through. And I really like her. She may not be brave, but she's tenacious, and the thoughts in her head make me crack up just the same. And Joe...what I wouldn't do to actually meet him (if he were real, of course). Joyce - she got what she deserved. I just wish someone would actually smack Vinnie. He deserves it. I adore this series, and I plan on finishing it. The story never lags or drags, there's always something going on. Each character is vividly colourful. I couldn't ask for better.

I am really starting to like this series. I swear though, Stephanie is in way over her head.
Some of the priorities of these characters is ridiculous. And many are gun-toting, gossiping, quirky characters that can drive me crazy one second and I love the next. None more so than Lula. This girl is something else. But she has a good heart it seems. Can't help but love her, even when she often doubles Stephanie's trouble. I cannot believe how often she gets shot at in this book! It is insane! If you ever thought you lived in a bad neighborhood, or crap often happens to or around you, please read this. You might change your mind!

Is there anything better than spending time with my favorite sassy Jersey girl with the orange hair? I think not.
