Interesting enough subject matter, particularly given that I did a lot of work involving Russia and Ukraine from the late 1990s to the mid 2010s. Somehow though, despite it being a fascinating story, he manages to turn it into a wordy and academic book utterly bereft of spark, warmth or human interest. Read Second-Hand Time by Svetlana Alexievich if you want to know what really happened on the ground at at an interpersonal level and be utterly gripped. Read this book if you want to know what happened on a political and economic level and be completely uninspired.
