4 stars. Given that this was published in 1996 I was a bit nervous going into this but it is a classic of the genre and I knew I wanted to read it eventually. Except for a few things that feel dated this was such an incredible read. I love Kallmaker’s writing style so much. It’s very easy to fall into her stories (of the two that I’ve read so far) and there was something so gripping about this book.

Faith is struggling with her sexuality. She’s a deep in the closet lesbian due to her religion and her strict and overly religious parents. It was tough at times being in her head because I just wanted to hug her and my heart hurt for her. She was so in denial about it all. And then the scene where she came out had me in tears. My heart! As for the romance between her and Sydney it was good and I did think they had wonderful chemistry (despite the fact that Faith was dating Sydney’s brother) but I feel like we didn’t really get to know her. I wanted more from her character but what we got she is likable and it was cool that she was running for Senator.

I don’t love the cheating that goes on but that tension between Faith and Sydney was so good with just the right amount of angst. I liked the ending though I did want more closure with Faith’s parents. but still I can definitely see why this is a classic and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I've been reading so many books written in the last 10 years that this felt very different. There aren't many coming out stories being published at this point, so this was a good reminder of how different things are now.

Internalised homophobia and basically everything religion teaches you about being gay - self hate, self loathing, misplaced guilt and many more negative connotation on being gay. This was annoying to read because of the Catholic hate plus homophobia and all the holier than thou antics in the story. Honestly, religion, FUCK YOU VERY MUCH.

The thing that amazes me, this was a short book but somehow it covered women empowerment, historical women and their influence in shaping our society plus the topic of alcoholism. In a short span of time Kallmaker managed to touch on serious topics and have it displayed in enough detail that the the story had proper depth given the limited pages.

Wild Things was wicked fun

This was my first Kallmaker and I will definitely be reading more of her stuff. The intrigue was high and the predicament Faith finds herself in is quite the puzzle. I enjoyed going on this journey with her and I loved the history that got interwoven into the story. I would be surprised if this book hasn’t inspired a few women to run for office or quit drinking. Sydney is fabulous and I think we all wish we had a family like the Van Allen’s. I’m not a religious person, but it was interesting to get Faith’s perspective/experience coming from a staunch Catholic background.

Note that there is some domestic abuse (father on daughter violence) portrayed and if that is triggering for you, give this one a pass.

A well-written, interesting romance with well-drawn characters and an interesting storyline. I would have liked to see more tension in Sydney's story and the potential impact of her attraction to Faith on her political career, but was satisfied overall with this one and it doesn't bill itself as a political thriller. Overall, the depiction of Faith, a devout Catholic and an academic and Sydney, a super-rich, lesbian, politician, rang true and the author didn't rely on the usual artificial obstacles and painful misunderstandings to further the plot.

A really thought provoking book, that navigates some difficult areas. Howver, it seem to finish really abruptly, which considering the really intelligently reasoned beginning and middle, left me feeling a little disappointed.
