mostly a good read

I found myself skimming through the book some but I particularly enjoyed the Irish Channel and Cajun People chapters. Worth the read.

This had some interesting facts and stories in it, but I found the explicit racism excruciatingly hard to read. I also expected something different than what this book was - a collection of actual folktales, rather than the hodge podge of stories and history that it was. Annie's review from November 2011 describes much of my own reaction as well, so I won't spend much time detailing.

More a collection of brief historical vignettes than a collection of folk lore. This book is interesting but reflects the “folk lore” of Louisiana when it was assembled in this book (1940’s). Most of it is written in period vernacular which is interesting. It gives you the opportunity to hear some stories from around the state as you would have heard them from older folks some 80 years ago. It is difficult to read in long stints and requires frequent breaks. It is a good read but not captivating. It does not place any of the stories in context. It is a worthwhile read form a historical perspective and a glimpse into our states past. Worth a read.
