My first Dahl and come away from it with mixed feelings.

The book has 7 total stories, with the wonderful story of Henry Sugar making up the largest part of the book. I was actually a bit surprised that the book is half fiction and half of it non-fiction (albeit there's some controversy with some of those stories). I found most of the stories to be forgettable, but there's some great lines in there scattered about. Henry Sugar is the highlight of the book and I am a sucker for a morality tale so I really enjoyed it. The Swan is probably the most rage inducing thing I've read in awhile, but it ends in a tragically mythical way that I really enjoyed. Cant really say much about the others, since they did not pull at me (for the most part) in any way.

Interested to see how well I enjoy Dahl's longer works.

I was utterly, completely bowled over by this book of short stories by Roald Dahl. Never in a million years did I expect the person who entertained me throughout childhood to evoke an entirely different range of emotions in adulthood.

The book contained 7 stories and all 7 of them broke my heart in a million pieces. The most poignant story for me was "The Swan" and I recommend that everybody and their dog should read it. The main story, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” was equally engrossing and thought-provoking.

What made me completely fall in love with the book was the author's memoirs and his tips on how to become a fiction writer and how he got his start in the writing world. Of course, I can't forget to mention, the book also included the very first piece he had written describing his RAF days during WWII.

Roald Dahl is a certifiable chameleon in terms of writing and I will be looking into his other books for adults as soon as possible

I get to say I've read The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar now that I've watched the Netflix short film, yes? If every short story I wanted to read was dramatized and starred a bucket list of amazing actors (where WERE the women?) I'd read ever so much faster.

Even as a full grown adult “The Swan” has completely traumatized me.

This book was a pretty big disappointment after how much I’ve loved all of Dahl’s other work that I’ve read. I feel like he just didn’t capture my attention with these stories. I found myself flipping forward to see how much I still had to struggle through before each story was done. I think I’ll stick to Dahl’s novels from now on and skip past the short stories!

As you can tell, I loved - still love - Roald Dahl. This was one of my favorite books - one, because it's all short stories and two, I wanted to be Henry Sugar. I even tried the candle bit.

"A Piece of Cake" is also well-worth the read. It's autobiographical and if you've read Boy and his other books about himself, you'll enjoy it too. His life is almost unbelievable. Needless to say, I also wanted to be him too when I was young.

This book was full of short stories that can be enjoyed by all.

I especially liked "The Boy Who Talked With Animals".

Really exciting stuff here, these short stories are like good tv, made for the masses, made to entertain, and at a caliber that can be enjoyed by both children and adults (although some of these will be much less interesting for children). Just chalk full of tension, moving quickly from conflict to conflict, real economical story telling, really sharp. This particular collection does some smoke and mirror work by placing non-fiction stories and fiction stories side by side, and Dahl works hard to surround even the most fantastical stories in reality.

Re-reading one of my all time favorite books or more accurately short stories by Road Dahl. While the story of Henry Sugar is far less known than James and the Giant Peach or Charile and the Chocolate Factory ... as much as I loved those stories growing up, its Henry Sugar that stuck with me the most. And despite having first read this over 30+ years ago, enjoy it just as much as an adult. Highly recommended
