I love Candice Bushnell for giving us a book that eventually became the TV series Sex and the City, but most of her books are OK. Not a bad way to pass an afternoon though.
Nico, Wendy, and Victory-oh my goodness ladies. Other reviewers said they couldn't believe the superficial bs or that any of this could possibly happen *sigh* happens more often than you think! They say running a business and being a sniper use the same tactics and strategy; if you don't believe it stay out of business.
"Lipstick Jungle" offers a glamorous and fast-paced look into the lives of three successful women in New York City. Candace Bushnell's novel explores their careers, relationships, and personal struggles with wit and sharp observation. The characters are vibrant and relatable, navigating the challenges of ambition and friendship. It’s an engaging read that provides a fun and insightful glimpse into the world of high-powered women balancing their careers and personal lives.
I've had a massive migraine for the last week so screens were out of the question for me. No kobo or kindle reviews, no reading on my phone or ipad. Nothing.
So I figured, let's pick up a book that will hopefully let me just read and be fun and not have to take it too seriously.
I LOVED THIS DUDE. It felt like the good ole 2000s rom coms I used to watch on television that replayed over and over. 13 Going on 30, Devil Wears Prada, those kind of films! It gave me that kind of vibe and I could just sit back and enjoy.
Now, is all of it realistic? Gosh no. Is the sexism believable? Yes. Is Shane trash? Absoluta-fricking-lutely.
If you wanted the most serious female business book, this isn't it. If you want drama and gossip in a way only the 2000s understood? This is it.
Now I need to watch the television show and maybe pick up Sex and the City next. It's time... I'm finally... gasp... an adult woman.
I stopped reading at page 48 and will sell or donate the book. Same NY characters, same lifestyles and interests, same actions and passions as Sex in the City. So, I decided to abandon ship and start something else.
I liked this book a lot! I loved that it was switched gender roles. the females were super successful and powerful, while the men (moreso husbands) in the book were the stay at home dads. but because the females were the powerful ones, it made you question the way you thought about society norms. For example, shane was my least favorite character, for obvious reasons. he used wendy & her money. he was so rude & a crybaby. but he was a good father. and when they were getting divorce, it made so much sense why wendy couldn’t take custody away from him. he took care of them. i completely agreed with wendy, he could’ve gotten a job and provided for himself, but i probably wouldn’t say that if it were a women. I loved Victory, i loved her outspoken personality. I thought the Nico plot line of her having an affair was great. i also kind of agree w her. i think the affair was good for her, it made her appreciate what she had. and lust & excitement can’t replace security & love. but no harm, no foul. i liked that Nico and Wendy had children, they were successful in the business world yet they were still good mothers. but they relied on their husbands & it shows that women can be the bread & butter just as much as the man. lastly, i liked that victory was dating Lyne, the billionaire. it was a great plot line. i think she stood her own & wanted it to be known that she was successful without him & her success was just as important as his, if not more because she was a women. she might not be a billionaire but she was working to be successful. good book, ahead of its time in my opinion

Nico O’Neilly, Victory Ford, and Wendy Healy are all successful women living in New York City. Nico is the editor of Bonfire Magazine, Victory is an established fashion designer, and Wendy is the president of Parador Pictures. All three women are balancing the stresses of being successful, relationships, and friendships. Nico is struggling with her marriage and hoping to land a promotion at work. Wendy’s marriage is crumbling due to her hectic work schedule and Victory has just bombed her spring fashion show. All these ladies are trying to work past all their obstacles to be successful in New York City.
This story will catch a reader’s attention as a feminist read. It is a feminist read and the writing and story will remind you of that fact throughout almost to an insufferable degree. The characters always remind themselves that the men around them are weak and they deserve better. Sometimes the attitudes of the main characters drove me crazy. Also, about half way through the story, I noticed the style of the writing. Every chapter started with a character on a plane, hung over, or in some state that the reader was unaware of and then the character sat and contemplated about their previous week, month, etc. I don’t understand why big chunks of the book were written as though everything already happened and now the character is sitting on a plane and recounting it in their head. I finished but the book was way too long.
