I somewhat enjoyed the first woman's story, it was an easy read, but I should have put the book down after that as it only got worse. Even the way each part was written just seemed like such a terrible idea, especially the middle two chunks. None of the stories linked up besides a name here or there, and none of them went anywhere. You get a quick (but painful) glimpse into the lives of a few selfish/self centred women and then nothing. I like Candace's other books so I really don't know what happened here but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I MUST be a glutton for punishment! I kept being told that candice bushnell is a genius and she can really WRITE so I kept reading her stuff.

To no avail. trite garbage. Characters you just cannot like, and storylines that depress the hell out of me. I HATE reading a book that leaves me depressed.

The only story I KINDA liked was the last one...Thus the second star. The first one was OKAY, but sheesh, what a skanky WHORE.

Four Blondes is written in the same vein as the original Sex and the City collection. It would seem that Bushnell wasn’t as confident to write more fictionally and expanded more on things that were in that, rather than coming up with more original material. In addition, the stories about the four blondes are completely independent of each other, with no interconnecting pieces whatsoever, which is fine, but I guess not what I was expecting.
All of the four main characters are unlivable in some aspect, but I suppose they are supposed to be, and then they all get happy endings, but for what?
I finished the novel, so I guess it wasn’t so bad, but I guess I was expecting more. This felt like it was trying to be too much like real life, which is always a gamble. Also, I can never tell if the names she drops are real famous people from two or three decades ago or if they’re supposed to be caricatures of real people, which is pretty frustrating.

Okay this book is disgusting - but i was trying to get a feel for the popularity of Candace Bushnell (of sex in the city fame)without watching sex in the city. I notice most people rate this book pretty low, so i guess even fans don't like this one.

It was just creepy. High "Ick" factor. As in the normalization of super cringey sex ick.

However, i happened to be reading Ibsen's A Doll's House at the same time and it made a fascinating comparative study re: women's roles and what women have done with the freedoms they've fought for. Not all women of course, but some women. Hopefully fewer women than Candace Bushnell would have us believe...

So, we now have the right to eat macaroons as we please, and women from every social strata can prostitute themselves freely - yipee!

You've come a long way baby!

...all the time I was wondering: can such people really exist?
It filled me with uncomfortably depressive thoughts, with pity...
I read it through out of pure decendy (because it was given to me as I gift).
I was wondering where to place it afterwards... our local library has one issue, so now they have two of them.
I´m sorry to write this - but I was disgusted that much.
(All the people who love this - please forgive me!)

One of the tasks in my reading challenge was to read a book you started but never finished. I hardly ever do that, and the only two I could come up with were The Island of the Day Before by Umberto Eco and this. I wasn't really in the mood to tackle something heavy, so I figured I'd give Four Blondes, another shot. I still hated it. The first time, I made it through the first story, and quit on the second one. I was pretty close to the end, I just decided I didn't care about the characters anymore and I didn't like the writing style of either story enough to try the last two. I have to say, I hated it this time, too. I love Sex and the City the TV show, though I've never read the book, so I don't know if Four Blondes is typical of Bushnell's style, but I won't be rushing out to read any thing by her anytime soon.

Admittedly, this book has little redeeming social value, beyond being humorous. And that said, it's probably only entertaining to readers who recognize that "it's funny because it's true" - even without being in the social circles of people like these characters, you would need to realize that they exist. If you must respect the protagonist in order to enjoy a book, then don't pick up this one. Leave it for those who will laugh out loud in recognition of someone they know.

This was the worst book I have read in a long time. It was tremendously boring! It was the epitome of first world problems These characters had zero likability. Every page I found myself thinking "what is wrong with you!? Are you stupid?" I read it despite reviews because I had already picked it up from the used book store, I am not one to ever throw a book in the garbage, but I may make an exception for this one.
