It started out really scary.

This is the first John Saul book I’ve read in probably 15 years, and I found it rather enjoyable. This one had a good dose of suspense and gore, with characters that I actually cared about. The ending may have been a little rushed, but I didn’t really mind that. It was sufficient. Over all, I’m pleased. Good effort.

Mi-ar fi plăcut ca apoi, când acțiunea era plasată ani mai târziu, în timpurile noastre, să fie puțin mai bine conturată și această parte a poveștii, legătură dintre prezent și trecut, cum s-a ajuns în punctul ăsta. Mi s-a părut destul de vag tratată partea asta.

În zilele noastre, îl urmărim pe Ryan, un copil bun, plăpând, care după moartea tatălui și o bătaie de la o gașcă din școala publică, ajunge să învețe la St. Isaac, un loc unde credința se presupune că este mai presus de orice.

Dar și aici dă peste o situație destul de ciudata: a luat locul unui băiat omorât de polițiști în timp ce el omora pe cineva, iar un alt elev a dispărut și nu se mai știe nimic de el.

Unul dintre profesori, părintele Sebastian, face "experimente", ale căror victime sunt, din păcate, copiii. Alții, poate prea entuziasmați, poate prea obosiți, încep să creadă că biserica se bucura, după ani, de un triumf: au găsit ceva despre care se vorbea, dar în care aproape ca nu credeau: vechiul ritual al Incantarii, prin care este scos la iveala și domolit demonul oricărei persoane.

De aici pana la ce au pățit unii copii, pana la punctul culminant... Se întâmplă multe. Evenimente care la lumina nopții, când citeam, mi-au părut tare înfricoșătoare și mi-au dat fiori.

Eu il ador pe John Saul, I really do, dar trebuie sa recunosc, aceasta carte m-a cam dezamagit in final. Prea multe lucruri au ramas in suspans, prea putini oameni au murit pentru o carte de John Saul. Si chiar aveam asteptari foarte mari avand in vedere celelalte carti ale lui. Chiar si asa, am citit-o cu sufletul la gura, deci povestea sigur te va prinde si pe tine daca iti place genul horror.

Good buildup that engages, but hurriedly wrapped up with an unsatisfying conclusion.

Interesting storyline but there were a lot of holes in the story and in the conclusion.

I haven’t read anything from John Saul for quite a few years and picked this up on a whim. I remember his books being fairly quick and easy reads, usually interesting horror but nothing too gory, scary but not something to haunt my dreams. This started out ok, I came to quickly despise the mother and her vapid “poor me, how can I possibly cope without a man" crap, but story was pretty sound, at first. Using religious extremists, ok, we all know they're out there using their deity of choice to excuse all manner of stupidity. It works for the story here. But while there is a lot of good set up for what's about to go down there's so little explanation to bring it full circle and leaves so many questions unanswered. The "labyrinth" itself finally makes an appearance and is used but not explained, we get no resolution about the perpetrators, and what the heck about the evil inhabiting our supposed heroes? No answer. Evidently they're just stuck with the demons in them? The last chapter reads as if the author got a call that his publisher needed a book submitted within an hour and this one was the closest to being done so he just wrapped it up and off it went. Wholly unsatisfying.

Read it, finished it but only because I bought it. Better for young adults.

Pentru inceput, trebuie sa recunosc ca nu prea mi-a placut si finalul m-a lasat cam in aer.
Povestea a inceput promitator, ma asteptam la un horror foarte puternic dar din pacate nu a fost sa fie. Un lucru care mi-a placut a fost modul in care a conturat personajele.
In opinia mea cartea e putin grabita iar finalul te lasa in pom.
Mai mult nu stiu ce sa spun despre carte, ma asteptam la ceva mai mult deoarece pe coperta sta scris

I had never heard of John Saul until a couple days ago when one of my dearest friends let me borrow a whole stack of his work. I went into this story blind, and very thankful I did so. This played out more akin to The Exorcist than Stephen King, but man did it hit all the right notes! Fast paced and frenetic but not unbalanced. I tore through this in just a day's time. Can't wait to see where the next book takes me. Very highly recommend!
