There's something about John Saul that makes me love reading his books. I blew through this so quickly. Even though most of his books become predictable, for some reason I just can't help but loving it. Many people say that they were shocked at the second half/ending, but if you read enough of his books, it is predictable. I continue to love John Saul, and the best part I have found is his consistency in quality, at least so far.

more of a 2.5 rounded up… its kind of a silly little horror story but its also kind of fucked up in the way it makes you actively root for the death of an evil 13 year old girl. i don’t think i actually enjoyed a single character

The creepy parts were good and I was pleased that the author was not afraid to kill off likable characters. Even though the storyline was a little weak and the characters were pretty two dimensional, I would be interested in checking out this author's more recent work.

The wealthy families of Westover lives above the town, looking down on the abandoned old mill and the rest of the community. The Sturgess family living in Hilltop is the most prestigious family, as their founder built the mill over a century ago.
Philip Sturgess has gone against his family's wishes by marrying Carolyn, one of town residents. She lives with Philip on the family estate, along with her eleven year old daughter, Beth, her mother-in-law and Philip's thirteen year old daughter, Tracy. Because of the class differences, Philip's mother and daughter makes life difficult for Carolyn and Beth, making them feel unwanted, as they consider the town residents to be on the same social standing as their servants.
While there is the standard supernatural presence that shows up in many of John Saul's novels, the character of Tracy elevates the story to another level. Tracy's cruel, bullying and manipulative nature towards anybody she considers to be her inferior shows that evil that can reside in anybody, and has nothing to do with demonic possession or influence.

Whatever. I liked it. Unserious, if I had to describe it in one word. Classic evil stepsister x ghost vibes. It's a "read by the pool one afternoon" type of thing.

I love this book. This is my 1st John Saul book and it was better then I thought it might be. This follows a town that is long forgotten off the interstate. The prominent family of the town who is the wealthiest owns a mill that had a terrible tragedy take place over 20 year ago and killing a room full of people. The mill had been closed ever since then. The up and coming head of the family had big dreams of reopening the mill to bring this town back to life. Turns out there is a room at the bottom of the mill sealed shut locked, chain and has never been open since. What lies behind???? Hmmm add to the story a blended family between wealth and...not wealth... with children not getting along and the stress of family drama... and you got this story. Was a fun time.

Ah, John Saul is so fun. It took a little bit to get as overdramatic as I wanted it to be, though--it's been a while since I've read one of his books, though, maybe I'm just out-of-practice. There were some wild points, though. Definitely a fun time.

This was a fun easy read. It almost reads like a young adult novel, but is still a good story. Also, I'm a peacefull guy but I found myself wishing horrible things on Tracy throughout the book. I hope she gets her fingers shut in a drawer, papercuts from a manilla envelope, and burns her hand while getting a pizza out of the oven. Oh no. I've said too much. But like REM said, "I haven't said enough." Anyways, Hellfire. Yeah!

So I am really liking John Sauls books. During a few points I was even getting scared enough to wake my Fiance up haha. The stories are interesting, unique and well thought out. So far my only complaint is they never end happy! I know they are horror, but come on!

Definitely worth checking out. A well paced novel with a solid but unexpected conclusion.
