While I enjoyed the first half of the book or so, as I continued reading, certain issues got under my skin, issues that magnified my dislike of the conclusion. The writing style is very heavy-handed, and after a while that began to irk me. The highly-detailed, long-winded descriptions I could live with, but the long, rambling, emotional inner monologues got to be tiresome, especially when they were from minor characters. There was gratuitous violence, gore, and sexual episodes for shock value, and I couldn't help thinking that the story would have been more chilling and effective if some of the story was pared down. Certainly the mental breakdown of Joan could have been handled with a lighter touch, because it became just too much like something for a television show - too quick and too much, because you only have so much time and you have to be sure your entire audience 'gets it.' The only characters were one-dimensional ones, and again, while I can put up with that for a while (especially for a short work), eventually it's tiresome in a longer novel. Lastly, a few logistical issues to the mystery really bothered me, one especially. This will be an odd sentence, because I'm trying no to give anything away: When you have a
few chapters inside of the head of one of the sane characters who can give a real solid clue to the mystery, and the reader sees all his or her thoughts, and he or she is even thinking about the subject of that clue, it does not make any sense at all that they don't think of the clue. It just doesn't. When I reached one part of the reveal, and it's clear that character had known about this particular puzzle piece, I felt that either there would be another twist, negating the new evidence, or that the author had messed up and forgotten to put the clue earlier. But having finished the book, now I can tell that it's a third, worse alternative. John Saul was trying to milk more suspense out of the story, and to do that he cheated the reader. Even more irksome is that this particular clue would not have ruined the main mystery. Saul clearly wanted every reveal to be at the end, all the real clues to come in a jumble together, to surprise the reader as much as possible. But to do that he sacrificed some believability, something that, in my mind, he really couldn't afford to do.

I like John Saul and read his books when I want to take a break from the heavy stuff I normally read. I can knock out one of his books in a night. As usual this was a well told and suspenseful story with really great characters. The death of the Father so early in the story upset me because I really liked him. The story was also thought provoking - did Joan suffer from multiple personality disorder or do ghosts really exist? I only have one complaint: the child sex abuse was really salacious and not necessary. Other than that, a good read from John Saul as usual.

Enjoyable story, but not overly impressive. Some characters were clichéd and predictable. Satisfying ending though.

Straight forward book about a devilish perfume. Interesting murder mystery reminiscent of the 60's English film NIGHTMARE and Mario Bava's KILL, BABY, KILL!! (1966). The writer is from the South East of the States. He is able to write a family horror quite well without making it too confusing. Strange twist ending revealing the real parents of the little girl Joan.

Not terrible, but not good either.

I don't mind telling to some degree, but this was a bit much. The twist and climax were a bit twisted in a good way... but also kind of disgusting. The main characters aren't likable for the most part, especially Matthew. It does drag a bit. Wouldn't read again.

~2.5 stars.

Not for the faint of heart! The underlying subject of this entire story is child abuse. There is also the exposure of the vivid portrayal of bullying that can occur after one family has experienced a horrifying tragedy and the child(ren) still need to attend school and how judgments of well-meaning parents create the backdrop of the bullying. John Saul exposes evil with graphic images, gripping details, in a fast-paced, page-turning novel. Particularly in the climate of America at this time (2016), the novel cries out, "Let the innocent be innocent when one doesn't know all the facts!" I tried to solve the mystery as there are clues all along the way but I never suspected the ending.

I found this book in a cigar/used book shop (odd combo, but it was perfect for my husband and me). It was 50 cents and I needed something to read while on vacation. I flipped through the pages, liked the writing style, read the front flap of the book jacket and it seemed an interesting story. The first paragraph sucked me in immediately and I was thoroughly hooked. Throughout the story, new things would come to light, but never shed enough light to reveal what was happening exactly. Suspenseful and mysterious, I read the book in three days, could hardly put it down. Recommended for those who enjoy psychological dramas.

John Saul is geboren in 1942 in Pasadena, Californië.
Suffer the Children was geboren.
