This isn't what I usually think of as science fiction. The science that was in it was medical and felt paranormal, in the realm of witchcraft. It was very disturbing. This felt more like it belonged in the horror genre, but not really good like Stephen King. I enjoyed most of the book as I read it, but it left me with an unpleasant feeling in the end, like having a bad taste in my mouth after eating something. He is a good author and the book was well written, and the suspense built and held me really well. But, when I saw what was really going on, rather than scream, I thought "eww."

Un po troppo ispirato, o che sicuramente richiama, Rosemary baby di Ira Levin, ma indubbiamente una lettura intrigante e piacevole nel suo genere. Leggerò altro di questo autore.

The first half was a little slow for me. But the second half I found myself very invested in the story and trying to figure out a way for the characters to escape. A cool twist on a haunted house/demonic possession story. I liked the ending, but then the epilogue happened and made things seem too simple. Overall a 4 star book.

John Saul, the undisputed master of family based terror, pitches this story in the city centre, an unusual urban setting for him. What remains is the same brooding horror, as another family unit is thrust in to circumstances beyond their comprehension. The first half of Midnight Voices is slow, deliberately so, and all the better for it. The tension mounts as the mother, son and daughter face what seems to be a very slight menace. Saul doesn't overdo the plot, it's tight and well constructed, a decent hold-back-what-is-happening approach. When the curtains are pulled back, the machinations revealed, the tempo is upped and the latter half is more predictable, not quite as fun. Midnight Voices, although not essentially original, is in the right hands and remains an enjoyable read.

Midnight voices is an entertaining, creepy and eventually horrifying story. The dreams aren't just dreams and the neighbours aren't all that they appear to be.

For me, this book was not so good. It took me over a month to read it. I found it boring for the most part. The last 100 pages or so were the best part. I have read this author before, but I don't think this was his best book, but you might enjoy it.

In ‘Midnight Voices’, Caroline remarries after her husband was murdered in a mugging incident. When she and her children Ryan and Laurie move into their new home at the Rockwell, they begin to hear strange whispers at night. Soon it becomes apparent that Caroline’s new husband, Anthony is hiding a terrible secret.

The first few chapters held the promise of a truly chilling, suspenseful story. After all, it’s impossible to think some scenarios are boring, such as when someone has a nightmare or has the constant feeling of being watched and followed. However, the repetition killed whatever possibility of horror as hearing whispers and being unsure whether one is asleep or dreaming aren’t quite scary after the first time. Plus, there was no sense of mystery as what's going on would be quickly obvious to anyone who reads carefully enough.

The characters were one-dimensional and this further deteriorated the quality of the story. The worst example would be Caroline who was really not believable as a caring mother. There were many times when she knew for sure that something was wrong yet instead of confronting Anthony or getting the hell out of that creepy place with her children, she chose to act as if everything was fine. There was even once when she thought “one more night won’t make a difference”. Seriously? Her lack of reactions turned this into a frustrating read.

Besides that, the ending was poorly written. I personally didn’t think it was necessary for it to be complicated and most importantly, it was just hard to care about any character. Overall, ‘Midnight Voices’ was boring and predictable unlike one of the author’s books, ‘Faces of Fear’ which was fantastic and showcased his storytelling at its finest.
