All the 1-star reviews notwithstanding, I thought AT RISK was pretty darn good. Not classic Cornwell, but a perfectly decent effort nonetheless. It feels very different from her early work: punchier and more sparsely written, but lacking in immersive detail. Also, the main character seems flat compared to Scarpetta. The story is good--albeit rather contrived in some places, especially when the hero has to rely on fortune-telling to dig up clues. It's a quick read and very hard-boiled in tone, closer in spirit to a Hard Case crime novel than a CSI whodunit. So I was quite surprised to see this got turned into a Lifetime Original Movie (!).

I am a huge fan of Cornwall's Scarpetta series and this is no different.

Win is such a loveable character, especially since he saves a DOG. If that doesn't say it all I don't know what does. I found Monique to be an interesting character, and am curious to read The Front to see how her story is resolved. Huber and Toby were the perfect criminal master minds- pretty typical that I thought they were really cool but there you go

At Risk by Patricia Cornwell is the first book in the Winston Garano series and I think this could be the first book I’ve read by this author.

I’ve had this book sitting on my bookshelf for such a long time, so I thought it was about time to read it. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first started this book and I must say I found it easy enough to follow the storyline had me intrigued, but for me, it wasn’t a page-turner as such even though I was interested to know how it would come together at the end.

I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

2, maybe 2 1/2 stars.
This book took me a long time to read. It's not a long book, but it didn't make me want to read it.
The idea of the story, solving an old crime, is kinda cool. But I don't think it's written well enough to keep me interested. The last couple chapters were better than the rest of the book, but by then it was too late.
And the book jumps between two different characters and it always took awhile for me to figure out which character I was reading.
This is the first Patricia Cornwell book I have read, and I have a bunch of her books on our book shelf. I hope her other ones are better.

Good story with a few twists, l found the ending a little quick and slightly disappointing

A mediocre story, VERY badly written. Can't believe this was written by Patricia Cornwell--or that she would admit to it.

I LOVE the Kay Scarpetta Novels so when I saw this book on the Bargain shelf at BN I thought o0o0o Let's Try it!! I should have left it. :(
It was difficult to read. I never felt the characters were fully established, the pictures in my head kept changing the more I read and I never felt the connection I normally get with the main characters. Honestly, I couldn’t care less what happens to any of these people... well, maybe Miss Dog.
When I finished the book, it felt incomplete. Like this really is just the first part of a book and there was more planned but PC decided to use the 2nd part for book number 2. Unfortunately, I will not be reading the Winston Garano Book Number 2 because I can't bring myself to care.

I would say that 30% of this book deals with what Winston Garano is wearing or how handsome he is. I mean, sure there is a cold case to solve... minor political intrigue... possibly unrequited love... and even current crimes (like the rape of a main character - quickly turned into a non-issue) that one might think would take precedence in the reading. One would be wrong. How handsome that man is... How mysterious his past... how much he knows both.
The initial crime itself is "solved" almost as an after-thought. The only reasons I will read the next book in the series are that I own it already and I am hoping that there was more to the storyline that may appear in it.

A new series I liked the characters and development. Not sure why it is getting panned on good reads. I would definitely read the next installment.

This is the first Vincent Garano novel, which is a welcome change from the usual Kay Scarpetta! I have gotten tired of those and hoped for another character to be more interesting. Not so much.

Winston is a Massachusetts state investigator who was mysteriously sent to Tennessee to take a CSI training course, although Massachusetts has a lot of CSIs. Then, just as mysteriously, he is called home by his boss, District Attorney Monique Lamont. She wants him to investigate a 20-year old murder - in Tennessee! It seems it will help her run for governor somehow. The how is not ever really made clear. A lot of peripheral characters are involved, none of them very interesting, except maybe the older woman Winston has met and spent time with at the training course.

I was glad we were listening to this as we made a short trip, because had I been reading it, I probably would not have finished.
