Patricia Cornwell has this way of writing that I just start reading and before I know it, I've read half of the book. Her books just suck you in and don't let you leave until you've finished the book. This book had so many twists and turns and so many sub-plots that I didn't know what interested me most. I really enjoyed this book and it was another great addition to the Kay Scarpetta series.

Several themes run through this book and appear at times to be linked. KAY WEARS HERSELF OUT TRYING TO SOLVE THEM ALL

After a little girl is murdered in North Carolina, Dr. Kay Scarpetta who is a Forensic Pathologist and the FBI search for her killer. Could it be the work of Temple Gault a serial killer whom Dr. Scarpetta has been trying to apprehend or could it be some one less likely? At the same time, Kay is dealing with her niece who is experiencing some difficult times. The story goes back and forth between trying to solve the murder, and helping her niece while at the same time, Dr. Scarpetta is worried about her own life as it seems someone may be out to get her. The story as all of Patricia Cornwell's books are, was written very well and will keep any reader interested until the very end.

I loved the start to this. Moved along very quickly at first and brimming with atmosphere. But somehow it loses its way, like PC wasn’t sure where to go. Marino could have been left out of this to be honest as he hardly factors and his character has gone in a direction I don’t particularly like. Hopefully the next is better.

Yeah, no. This wasn't up to par with the rest of Cornwell's books. It almost seems like the first part was written by someone else. The ending was boring as well. Hopefully, the next Scarpetta will be better!

As well as investigating (with less forensics than usual) the brutal murder of an 11 year old, Scarpeta has do to deal with her FBI intern niece, be aware of a certain dangerous person from the past lurking in her periphery, dealing with the 'patholgist' plyaground The Body Farm; and on top of all that both her and Marino might have some big changes in their personal lives!

Reading these books in chronological order not only improves the feel and taste of this series, but feels like the only way to read it, as the ongoing nemesis serial killer (which heats up in this volume) story arc is key to making this series as successful as it is.

Cornwell casts a wider, surer narrative net in the latest case set for her increasingly complex heroine, Kay Scarpetta, Chief Medical Examiner for the Commonwealth of Virginia. As an FBI consultant, Scarpetta investigates the North Carolina murder of 11-year-old Emily Steiner, whose mutilation suggests the M.O. of an escaped killer met previously in Cruel and Unusual. Forensic clues from the body's second autopsy prompt Scarpetta to request that certain experiments be made at the University of Tennessee's Decay Research Facility, known as the Body Farm. Meanwhile, she, Pete Marino of the Richmond, Va., police, and her new love interest, FBI Unit Chief Benton Wesley investigate the apparent suicide (from autoerotic asphyxiation) of the local FBI agent in charge of the case. Then, Scarpetta's computer-whiz niece Lucy, working at FBI headquarters at Quantico, is charged with violating security. During her travels between North Carolina and Virginia, Scarpetta worries about both the less-than-forthcoming Lucy and Marino, who becomes emotionally entangled with Emily's beautiful stricken mother. Results at the Body Farm lead her to a convincing, if abrupt, resolution."

I didn't like this book as well as I've liked the previous books in the series, by far. I guess my greatest frustration lies with the issues I seem to always have with Marino. How on earth did someone as ignorant as Marino seems to be ever become a detective??? There was so little logic in so much of the book. Scarpetta seemed to be the only one in the book able to figure anything out, which was silly. She is a ME, not a psychic! Ugh. I hope the From Potter's Field is better than this book was!

Not every book in this series has been a 5 star but this one certainly was for me. I am listening to the audiobooks and the narrator on this one is fantastic. It really elevates the story. There are 2 separate stories in this book and both plot lines are riveting! I absolutely had to know what was going to happen! No spoilers so I won't go into the plots at all... plus some of them continue from book to book. It is best to experience it not knowing anything. The characters are so defined (well, mostly) whether they are good or bad. I liked this book so much I immediately started the audiobook for the next one. Thumbs up!!!

Well written, but kind of boring. I expected a lot more dealing with dead bodies than what was presented. Definitely a let down, but would still recommend. PG 13 rating.
