I’ve been wanting to try PC’s books for a while. My husband stopped at a yard sale and grabbed a box of books, cheap, not know what was in it.

I tried. Really I did. I read two chapters and then just skimmed. I thought maybe it just wasn’t my kind of book, but decided to check reviews on here. It’s not just me! The writing is choppy and made me feel like I was missing something. Several times I re read sentences trying to figure out what I missed. When really thing just aren’t written well.

I did see where people liked her books before this one, so maybe I will try and go back and find one I might like but I won’t waste my money on them. I’ll either hit the library or look at another yard sale. This one and the next in the series are headed out the door.

This had the potential to be a very good first in a series, but for some reason, the story made no sense what so ever. It says this is the first in the series, but I continuely felt like I had missed the first part of the book. No matter how much I read, it was like there was so much more that should have been said. I hope the next one in this series is better....I only gave it 3 stars because of the author.

Very easy to read change from Scarpetta, but it lacked the punch. It was an ok read, but if there are any more in the series, I wouldn't rush to read them.

I'd picked up this book a while back at a charity book sale when I was thoroughly enjoying the Scarpetta series. That was before the Scarpetta books took a dive down in quality, so this book remained in my book pile for some time. (Yet, I have been considering rereading the Scarpetta series because I've a few left to read, and I can't remember all the character history).

I finally decided to give this a read, and was surprised to find it wasn't too bad. Although it's extremely short I thought the main character, Winston Garano, likeable enough and engaging. He's given a decent back story, but it does fall into the all-too-often used category of tragedy in his youth that drives him to be a highly focused and doggedly determined police officer. Maybe one day someone will write a crime novel where the main character had a comfortable and boring upbringing and lives a life free from personal tragedy.

The thing that I thought went against this novel is the plot is just too over-complicated. Many of the elements really didn't need to be there in the first place. For a novel that is supposed to be about a cold case, why drag all the politics and a sexual assault into the mix? It comes across as adding shock value to draw in readers, but all it does it push the cold case into the background. I'm now wondering if this series will be about cold cases or new cases.

I'm interested enough to read the next in the series.

this novel I really enjoyed. I really got into the characters and what they are all about.
Didn't seem like the same characters I've read in other books, they had a little difference and were interesting. I thought the story was different than others, and the twists kept me wondering, which I like as I try to figure things out lol. I can't wait to see what happens with the characters in future novels since this is the first in the series.

A mediocre story, VERY badly written. Can't believe this was written by Patricia Cornwell--or that she would admit to it.

I LOVE the Kay Scarpetta Novels so when I saw this book on the Bargain shelf at BN I thought o0o0o Let's Try it!! I should have left it. :(
It was difficult to read. I never felt the characters were fully established, the pictures in my head kept changing the more I read and I never felt the connection I normally get with the main characters. Honestly, I couldn’t care less what happens to any of these people... well, maybe Miss Dog.
When I finished the book, it felt incomplete. Like this really is just the first part of a book and there was more planned but PC decided to use the 2nd part for book number 2. Unfortunately, I will not be reading the Winston Garano Book Number 2 because I can't bring myself to care.

Literally the worst, most cliched, most unreal murder mystery ever. How is this author famous? I kept reading just for the laughs.

This was the first time I've read a Patricia Cornwell novel. It was a page turner. I liked the main character, Win, and his devoted friend Sykes. The violence was expected and disturbing- it is a forensic crime novel, after all. I was a little confused by the plot- not keeping names straight all the time. I really liked Win's grandmother and his devotion to her and the dog he rescues, - so great character development of the good guys.
I think it was well written and I will look for more books from Patricia Cornwell when I want a quick, distracting read.

I see Patricia Cornwell, and I snap up the book, started reading and knew I had read before, now I see I have read twice before. So could not remember the end. Read again. Third read so must not be too bad, Ms. Cornwell is easy to read.
Second read, must have brought it years ago.

Story line. State Investigator with a very bossy female boss, who happens to be the District Attorney is going to run for governor. She needs a case that makes her look good, therefor she pushes the Investigator to another state to open up a old case. His friends are not his friends, and murder is afoot, double dealings all around. Files go missing and lies are told.

Fast read, but not as good as the Scarpetta series,(in my opinion)

This book did not feel like a Patricia Cornwell novel. I've read lots of her Scarpetta series and have always enjoyed the story. The main character, Winston Garano, is intriguing but what was happening around him either was confusing or I just didn't care about. I felt like I was missing parts of the story.
