My kids and I loved reading this book for our Dialectic homeschool history studies. My kids were well prepared to deeply engage with the historical interpreters at Colonial Williamsburg, a few months later.

I love history. But this is hands down one of the worst books I have ever read. Forcing myself to read it for school made me purely hate George Washington in history. Still loathe it.

Read with my 3rd and 4th graders. This book takes the reader through world events and the lives of noteworthy people who lived during the life of George Washington. We were engaged through the entire book and couldn't wait to see who we would meet next.

This was probably the highlight of our homeschool days for the past school year. Lively, just, fascinating.

Incredible series! Read on my own to follow along with my 5th and 6th grade students this year - they gave oral or written narrations for each section and we enjoyed discussing together as well, sometimes going off on rabbit trails when we wanted to know more about a person or event.

Very worthwhile but not nearly as captivating to the affections as her book on John Smith’s World. I am determined to collect all of this series. Delightfully illustrated, truthful, and useful.

We used this book as part of our history and I really liked the setup and the story snippets from what was happening around the world alongside the American revolutionary era. We didn't make it through everything and I would love a modern author to take the concept and develop it even more diversely.

Read-aloud most of it to my daughter because it can be difficult to follow for kids, but it’s a fascinating account of the time spanning George Washington’s life. Adults will learn much or be reminded of their own history lessons.

This is an excellent biography for younger grades. Foster writes engagingly and begins with an account of his childhood that will appeal to children and make George Washington a relevant figure for them.

True to its audience, the book is short. It holds skillful overviews of each phase of his life. I'm not sure why one reviewer says it presents a mythical Washington, for it is based in historical fact and stairs from diaries and written reports (though there is no heavy academic tone that would foil youthful readers). This is still a fantastic biography for use in upper elementary and middle grades.

In answer to the reviewer who wonders how one author can have two Newberys for "the same subject," that is because they are not the same subject. This book is a biography of one figure, while George Washington's World is a horizontal world history book of the years spanning his life. They are both good reads.

I read this aloud to the kids for history. We all enjoyed how the author weaved the events from all across the globe together with what was happening in America. We found the writing to be dry at times, but we came away with a good picture of what the world looked like during the lifetime of George Washington.
