I have to admit that there's nothing quite like reading a book to a kid that you both love in equal measure.

I cried, she cried, we both cried and laughed and cheered when those nasty, nasty kids got their just deserts. :)

And the songs? I admit I had a great time singing my own little tune to each as they were violently nasty and creative and delightful all at once. :)

Yeah. This is one of the best books ever. And I refuse to care one bit about the typos.

TOTAL CLASSIC.

Full Review.

I'm not entirely sure, if I have read it before or my only encounter with the story has been the film (2005), but nevertheless, this exceeded my expectations.

I could see the lessons author tried to give, I could see the pain and poorness and almost started to cry. The unjust world and how things are run in it. And well honestly my only objection was 'winning' the unknown competition. You can't win, if everyone except you were tested, that usually means cheating.

I loved Oompa-Loompa's songs a lot and thought that they were written brilliantly, which is kind of really cool, because I hated them in the film. I could also see similarities with the BFG and well... simply genuinely liked the book.

Think Wonka dropped the 50 pence in the snow?

I'm giving the French version of this Rouald Dahl book 3 stars. As a teenager, I read the originally written book again and again. I thought the book lacked some pizzazz, which took me by surprise. what drew me more towards this translation was the desire to see how well the songs have been redone.

Augustus Gloop, the big nincompoop became le gros plein de soupe. All the other rhymes were not up to par. Verruca Salt became Verruca Sait, which for a long time, I thought to be a spelling mistake. As we all know, there is no single word for Chocolate Factory in the English language. That was my second biggest reason for trying this book.

Partly the tepid(but still honourable) score was due to the fact that I'd read the book so many times ago that the magic seemed to have worn away in these pages. Now I'm afraid of rereading Dahl's best work. Would I find The Witches satisfactory? Will I react favorably to the mature The Story of Henry Sugar and other stories? What of his beloved and highly relatable and relevant biographies?

Us readers whose battered, if not cynical, minds have grown up and stopped believed in magic, and want more sanguine fare, we must pause once in a while and ask ourselves that the rut we're all in doesn't grant us a view of the stars. Look at me mangling Wilde. See what I mean?

Returning to Charlie, this book felt like the twin brother of its sequel. The Great Glass Elevator is one of the least inspired books by Rouald Dahl. I've got fairy fatigue. Dahl was twelve times the man I am. I admire him immensely. But by today's standards people don't understand him. Look at what the moviemakers did to Fantastic Mr Fox! Anyway, it is time I took a break, longer this time, of children's books. I've several books that are more interesting than usual, and I had better head back to them.

One of my New Years Resolutions was the read more "classics" this year, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was one of the first I was able to pick up. I was so lucky that I found this book at a local charity book sale! It was screaming my name the minute I saw it on the table and it's been screaming my name while it's been sitting on my bookshelf (well...desk. My bookshelves are rather full. I need to get reading faster and more to clear some room...).

I've seen both of the movies (Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp) so I knew what was coming. It was going to be a book full of shenanigans with some humor and lessons sprinkled throughout. And boy, did it not disappoint! I have to say, Roald Dahl is one amazing author and I really want to read more by him now. This classic is so full of childish nonsense and valuable lessons all at the same time. It's mesmerizing what this man could do with his words.

The book has some deep, dark material that comes off as playful. Charlie and his family weren't well off and Roald make that very, very clear. Yet the prose he puts this narrative in makes it seem... fun? Silly? I can't even pick the right word. As an adult, I am in awe of how this family survived but I could easily see a child laughing their way through. A child would truly have no idea what the horror of starving is like, yet it is described so amazingly in this book...

Seriously, I'm in awe. I am in complete and utter awe over this man's writing. He's a literary genius, to say the least.

There are parts as an adult that I can pick apart, but I don't think this book was intended to be some literary work that needs to be examined like Shakespeare. This book shows the good and the bad of being a kid - don't be stubborn, don't be a brat, don't watch television all day, don't go ahead without listening - stuff that we all learn as a kid. Charlie is the "perfect" child who listens and does what he is supposed to, and in the end he wins. Is this how life works? Nope. Is it still important to teach? Heck yes!

Wonka is such a wild and interesting character too. He's a very old adult but doesn't act like it who employs Oompa Loompa and pays them in cacoa beans. He has a giant workshop but no workers and wants to give a child his only life's work. Yes, that makes so much sense... Not. But it's believable in this book, because he's so wild and zany... I'd love to see a perfect adaption of this book - word for word, picture for picture, etc.

The language, dark humour and sarcasm in this book also make it absolutely hilarious. Snozzberries gets me every time! And Wonka's absolutely amazing sarcasm against the children... Well, it's mean but it's funny. So funny. I found myself giggling at how ridiculous some of the comments were, yet I still loved it all the same.

Either way, this book is amazing! I wish I would have read it as a kid but reading it as an adult was so much funnier! Amazingly enough, this book only took me two days to finish.

Five out of five stars!

I need some more Roald Dahl in my life!

Consigliatissimo!

I stand with Rushdie. CENSORING ROALD DAHLS BOOKS IS WRONG! Does that sensitivity board think that changing the word fat to enormous, or ugly and beastly to just ugly seriously going to hurt someone’s feelings? Children need to grow in an environment where they will be prepared for the real world. This namby pamby nitpicking is what wil cause triggers in the future. Forget crimes against women, cruelty to animals, child abuse; oh mummy this lady in this book has black hair? Ummmmm this author is a bad man. And what really gets me is that puffin got his estate’s agreement and permission to do this! This is worse than giving every single child on a baseball team a trophy. Oh great yeah you…we’re umm..a great bench warmer! So yeah umm here is a trophy. DOES ENGLAND NOT HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH OR GUARDS AGAINST CENSORSHIP?

needed a shot of Roald Dahl. What whimsy! This is one instance when I enjoy the book and the movie.

This was pretty fun! I really like both epic movies. Charlie does not commit a crime like the gene wilder version and the oompa loompas songs are different. But this was very fun short read. All I can say is Ronald Dahl wants kids to read again and I agree wholeheartedly!
