These books are a must for Miyazaki fans/collectors. Howls Moving Castle is one of my favourite ghibli films and this book did not disappoint. It’s filled with concept art, storyboards, commentary on the designs process as well as the final screenplay at the end. I found the animators commentary super interesting on animating for a European setting versus their usual Japanese settings and what that entails!
You're my honeybunch, sugarplum Pumpy-umpy-umpkin You're my sweetie pie You're my cuppycake Gumdrop, snoogums-boogums You're the apple of my eye And I love you so and I want you to know That I'll always be right here And I love to sing sweet songs to you Because you are so dear
I'm so glad I bought this used, dents and all, because if I had paid full price ($35 USD) I would've been severely disappointed.
What I wanted: lots, LOTS of concept art, storyboards, plenty of staff interviews, and some behind the scenes/making of stuff
What I got: SOME concept art, most of it lazily untranslated, a few interviews with some of the staff (notably not Miyazaki) mostly about CG art, lots of stills from the movie (???? but I can just watch the movie?) and 50 pages of the complete screenplay, which is only good for confirming the copy editors did indeed misquote the English screenplay.
I don't feel like this book needs an explanation but this book is hands down my number one favourite book of all time. Hayao miyazaki writes and draws girls so beautifully and doesn't sexualise his characters. And thats just the standard for him. It's sadly refreshing, and I hope I can find more authors out there who do the same. I want independence with the brains or the brawn. I'm sick of women and girls being sexy.
This book easily set the standard for love for me too. The movie aswell. If you haven't seen the movie I highly recommend it.
the top tier of art books to ever exists. the interviews with all the incredibly talented art directors and supervisors, Miyazaki's sketches and storyboards and ideas behind every small detail just made it feel like I was part of the process of creating this masterpiece. and to top it all off, the whole screenplay was included (yes I read screenplays like books I love storytelling)
Such a beautiful book, it's amazing to see the development of one of my favorite movies. The artwork even the scrapped drafts are works of art, it's definitely worth looking into to see the evolution of this movie's art.
