A Legacy of Drizzt book - but without Drizzt. This is the final part of the adventures of Artemis Entreri and Jarlaxle. A strange book that has 2 conclusions as the characters seem to undermine all the good deeds they did in the last book. The book is still very much about Artemis' emotional education but the story is very jumbled. The story does come to a conclusion in the end but it feels rather unsatisfying.

R. A. Salvatore could have stopped writing this series here and it would have been a most satisfying ending. The heart and soul of cold-blooded killer Artemis Entreri are laid bare, the abuse both physical and spiritual that the young Artemis experiences fully explored. I don't that there has been a book that I have enjoyed more fully and been more immersed in than "Road of the Patriarch".

Entreri is not redeemed per se at the end of this story, there is no redemption for him. There can be no redemption for someone like him. But he is more fully a character who is relatable.

This book explores so much, from child abuse and sexual molestation, to religious oligarchy and abuses of power. This is not only an exploration of the tortured soul of Artemis Entreri, but is a testament to some of the trials and tribulations that are on display in the real world today.

The books after this one seemed to suffer, almost as if Salvatore threw his entire being into writing this story, that this story NEEDED to get out, and once it was out, he was spent. The writing in the series has started to pick back up as he finds his second (third) wind in this long and entertaining book series.

After reading many of his books, I cannot deny that Salvatore is a good writer, with a pleasant prose that flows smoothly.

Unfortunately, that concludes the positive part of this review. This book is almost total crap.

Salvatore, I have noticed, tends to follow a rule of threes. The first book in a trilogy is quite good, the second is so-so, and the third sucks. This is the third.

Most of the book is focused on the characters uncharacteristically making huge mistakes and trying to patch them up somehow. This is quite unusual for Artemis (for whom, however, there is some sort of explanation), and moreso for Jarlaxle. About everything they do in this book is badly planned and fails miserably. Somehow, this is in line with the spirit of the book: fixing the huge blunder (by the author) of putting the two characters in the Bloodstone Lands, which makes no sense at all.

In the end, the part set in the Bloodstone Lands concludes with a huge "nothing whatsoever has happened". Artemis and Jarlaxle are gone and not expected to return, the lay of the land is still the same, the king is still at odds with the Citadel of Assassins, and all the book appears not have added anything meaningful in that storyline.

Then, there are the usual, and too-frequent, combats described in painstaking detail, move by move. I'm deathly bored of this stuff in Salvatore's books, and essentially my brain is somewhat disconnected in these parts, until the combat is over. Come on, it is possible to write good books even without being so fastidious with the fights.

The final part almost seems completely removed from the rest of the book, which in itself is fine. The characters are again in a more suited environment (Memnon), and things get a bit more coherent, while Entreri deals with his past, and something about Athrogate's past is revealed as well. But again, this is totally botched. The inner turmoils of Entreri and, even more, of Athrogate seem to be forcibly put and concentrated in the final part of the book. No trace of a significant character development can be found in the first two parts, and then the author suddenly decides to put it all in in a flurry.

By this time, I should have learned to stay away from Salvatore's books, because even when I start liking a series, eventually he manages to burn it up in a total bunch of crap. But I'm too into Forgotten Realms lore to give up.

Série o Žoldácích mi plně vyhovuje. Věčný oportunista Jarlaxle a bručoun Entreri. Čtivé a zábavné.

Incredible battles, story telling and character building. Artemis is just one hurt soul, so angry but so fragile. Looking forward for another book dedicated sorely to him.

A very interesting story about facing one's past, and how much that determines our present, all set in the Forgotten Realms universe.
