I’ve heard Auster is an acquired taste and after reading this I have to agree.
It was strange to read this (my first time reading Auster) and then learn he passed away a few weeks later. If you’ve read this, you would know why that would seem like a continuation of the theme of the New York Trilogy.
Auster deconstructs the detective novel and himself across three strange novellas. Some of his observations are dated and morally problematic, but this is definitely worth a read if you are a writer or creative.
