Not only an excellent introduction to the grandiose history of the Byzantine Empire, Byzantium: The Early Centuries is an affectionate and enjoyable read. Norwich clearly showcases his wit and love of the subject with every page, and one cannot help but share his feelings while enchanted with his writing. Every Emperor or Empress, Hero or Traitor, feel alive through this work, managing to connect the reader to the remarkably underrated Byzantine Empire, which (As Norwich himself states) saved Western civilization as we know it.

Magnificent work! Reading it is like watching some exciting movie! This book is about people, men and women, who reigned and surved this empire. Everything is described so well, You can almost perceive dialogue between characters. Early centuries of Byzantium are interesting by themselves, but the way they are introduced to the reader is something outstanding!
Bible for every historian!

Surprisingly fast paced for such a detailed complicated study.

Enjoyable read with smooth narrative with good balance of detail and narration. Looking forward to next two volumes.
