A good history of the Middle Sea, from the Phoenicians through to World War One. Though epic in scope it does a good job of keeping to the basic themes and describing the various conflicts and changes as part of the rhythms of history. John Julius Norwich is a great writer, the well told and very readable chapter covering the Carlist Wars of Spain, one of the more complicated and tangled tales of the 19th century, attests to his ability. I am definitely ready for an extended sightseeing tour through the Mediterranean.
