Wow, what a great read and journey, brave brave men, the author really takes you on the journey with them.
Thoroughly recommend reading this book.

A riveting yarn by a writer who knows his subject. To be read by big bodies of water.

I really like the author's descriptions of sailing tactics and heavy weather sailing. I've dog eared many pages for quick reference. Great story, well written.

Read this for the second time. Having lived on a sailboat for four years and growing up near the sea, I love sea stories and documentaries.

Exceptionally well written pageturner..if you are into this kind of thing. The fact that I already knew the story and its outcome did not spoil anything for me.

Very interesting account of a race to circumnavigate the globe in the 60's. The print edition would have benefited with some photos and maps but the tales told are good ones.

This is one of my all time favourites- well worth a read for anyone who enjoys epic heroism, emotional roller coasters and inspiration

This book turned out to be much more engaging that I expected. Peter Nichols managed to paint a clear picture of most (real) characters involved in the "race" and somehow, made decent comments on the psychology of such adventurers and/or of people who spend a long time at sea. He explained the conditions and challenges of such a trip and tried to educate on various matters about sailing (most of those went over my head to be honest, but still...) His comments on how the press of the era functioned and how the reading crowd responded and how people will often overlook the reality in order to chase a dream, were spot on too.

Completely unfamiliar that I am with sailing, I suprised myself by watching the preparations of each expendition with interest. Following the progress and the relative position of each sailor comparing with the others was captivating too.
The description of the situation of each man and vessel at sea, their feelings and way of thinking, the storms and gales and waves and various mishaps made for an un-put-down-able combination on most parts of the book. Especially towards the end, the book gets very moving. The author writes about the aftermath of the sail too.

Of course, adventurers tend to be eccentrics, often completely failing on others parts of their life or not always been the easier people to live with. There are consequences of their decisions to their families and friends that aren't pleasant most of the time. Picturing them as heroes for their achievements is only one side of the story. The author kind of touches on these matters too, although not very throughtfully.

This is a fascinating account about the 1968/1969 Golden Race as much as a study on human nature and on various other subjects, providing food for thought.

My rating could be higher, but I felt that occasionally the author sidetracked his story and roamed a bit too much on the psychology of man at sea or on technical stuff, when the adventure part was most gripping, thus interrupting the pace of the narration sometimes.

All in all, a fascinating read.


Το βιβλίο καταπιάνεται με τον πρώτο ιστιοπλοϊκό διαγωνισμό που απαιτούσε να γίνει ο γύρος του κόσμου μέσω του Νότιου Ωκεανού, με ένα σκάφος, από μόνο ένα άτομο, χωρίς καμία στάση ή εξωτερική βοήθεια. Τη Golden Globe Race που οργάνωσαν οι Sunday Times του Λονδίνου το 1968-1969.

Παρόλο που είμαι άσχετη με την ιστιοπλοΐα, βρήκα το βιβλίο πολύ ενδιαφέρον. Ο Peter Nichols καταφέρνει και ζωντανεύει κάθε (πραγματικό) χαρακτήρα του βιβλίου, τους βασικούς ανταγωνιστές πιο πολύ από άλλους. Ταυτόχρονα μεταφέρει το κλίμα της εποχής, τον πυρετό της προετοιμασίας για το μεγάλο ταξίδι, το ενδιαφέρον του κοινού -συχνά υποδαυλισμένο τεχνηέντως από τον τύπο.

Όταν πλέον σταδιακά όλοι οι συμμετέχοντες ξεκινάνε το ταξίδι τους, η αφήγηση παίρνει μία άλλη γοητεία. Η πρόοδος του καθενός συγκριτικά με τους υπόλοιπους αλλά κι από μόνη της, η περιγραφή των δυσκολιών και των καταστάσεων που αντιμετωπίζει ο κάθε άντρας και το κάθε σκάφος ανάλογα και με την ιδιοσυγκρασία του, οι σκέψεις και τα αισθήματα του καθενός, καθώς και τα σχόλια του συγγραφέα για την ψυχολογία του ανθρώπου στην θάλασσα γενικότερα, ήταν συχνά καθηλωτικά. Οι τεχνικές λεπτομέρειες είχαν το ενδιαφέρον τους ακόμα και για εμένα αν και πολλά πράγματα μάλλον δεν τα κατάλαβα. Προς το τέλος το βιβλίο γίνεται συγκινητικό και συγκλονιστικό.

Φυσικά οι άνθρωποι που κυνηγούν την περιπέτεια και φτάνουν στα άκρα, συχνά παρουσιάζονται σαν ήρωες. Ίσως και να είναι. Υπάρχει και η άλλη πλευρά της ιστορίας. Μπορεί να είναι δύσκολοι άνθρωποι να ζεις μαζί τους, μπορεί τα πάθη τους να έχουν τραγικές επιπτώσεις στις οικογένειες και στους δικούς τους ανθρώπους, μπορεί σε άλλους τομείς της ζωής τους να είναι αποτυχημένοι. Ο συγγραφέας αγγίζει και αυτή την πλευρά της ιστορίας ως ένα βαθμό. Μάλιστα σαν επίλογο μας παρουσιάζει τις επιπτώσεις αυτής της απίστευτης κούρσας στη θάλασσα και σε κάθε διαγωνιζόμενο και γενικότερα στην ιστιοπλοΐα και στην αγωνιστική ιστιοπλοΐα.

Θα μπορούσα να δώσω ακόμα υψηλότερη βαθμολογία αν δεν αισθανόμουνα ότι κάποιες φορές ο συγγραφέας ξεφεύγει λίγο με τις παρατηρήσεις του για τεχνικά θέματα ή με την ανάλυσή του για την ψυχολογία του ναυτικού κτλ, διακόπτοντας τον ρυθμό της αφήγησης εκεί που κορυφώνεται η κυρίως δράση.

Πάντως είναι ένα γοητευτικό βιβλίο, τόσο για την Golden Race του 1968-69 όσο και για την ανθρώπινη φύση. Προσφέρει τροφή για σκέψη. Μου άρεσε.
