The 4/5 star rating is based on my feeling that "the Hobbit" as a story is a five. However, I wasn't super crazy about this particular representation/presentation of the timeless Tolkein masterpiece. Hence the knock down to 4.

I'm sure most of us hardcore Hobbit/LOTR fans will appreciate this format, to some degree, but NOTHING beats the original imho.

tThe Hobbit is a prelude to The Lord of the Rings, and shows the journey Bilbo has and how he also met Gandalf the Grey. Gandalf the Grey will be a key part of The Lord of the Rings.

tThe Hobbit is written in Bilbo Baggin’s point of view. The book is an adventure simply because the whole book shows Bilbo’s quest with the dwarves and how Bilbo finds the ring of power.
t
Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit with adventurous Took blood, is sitting in his hobbit hole when Galdalf walks by. After exchanging banter, Bilbo invites him to tea the next day. When tea time arrives, Gandalf is not to be seen until 13 dwarves come into Bilbo’s home. Gandalf explains to the group that Bilbo is the 14th member of the group to travel and sends Bilbo on his way with Thorin. The journey is long, but at the end, the group can also look forward to battling a fire breathing dragon, Smaug.

This book is enjoyable, but a slow read. People who like the slaying of giant spiders and many other mythical creatures will enjoy this book. There may be a few tears shed, like at character deaths, but there is no romance whatsoever, readers who like love stories can read other books if they want an affair of the heart.

tAt first, the book seems slow as the reader learns about Bilbo and the dwarves walking in the countryside, but when you start entering the questionable areas, Bilbo has to fight giants and other terrible creatures. Bilbo is portrayed as a simple hobbit, lazy and an idiot. As the story progresses, you learn Bilbo isn’t lazy, like going into a giant spider nest to save his friends, but is still an idiot for going into the nest.
t
tRecommending this book is no easy task. If you’re a fan of Twilight, you won’t find things like vampires falling in love with a human in The Hobbit. The Hobbit is for those who like an adventure, not a book containing sparkly vampires (shiver). If you have read/watched The Lord of the Rings, you might be a tad bit curious as to how Bilbo got the ring of power from Gollum, which is explained in the book.

tGandalf tricks Bilbo into going on a journey with him and 13 dwarves who are journeying to a mountain belonging to Thorin. Thorin is a descendant of one of the dwarf kings who lived in the mountain, and thus the mountain and its gold belong to him. Within the mountain, is a dragon, (Smaug) who is guarding the gold and kills anyone who tries to get the gold. Bilbo saves the dwarves from an elf king’s dungeons and many other situations and proves he is very brave.

The Hobbit is a classic book that is very well developed. The story is fantastic with all the action packed adventures of Bilbo saving the dwarves time and time again. The book makes you think and laugh with riddles and problems scattered throughout the book. To readers, I say this, grab your thinking cap and be prepared to be amazed at what little Bilbo Baggins can do.

The graphic novel's take on "The Hobbit". Light & whimsical like the original. The perfect read for a very wet weekend away.

A beautiful adaptation of a classic. All the major points of the story are here in this condensed version. Only very rarely does it feel like it’s moving a little faster than it should in order to get to the next major plot point.

I fell in love with the art. The watercolor style is beautiful and made me feel cozy throughout.

Extremely highly recommended, both for those unfamiliar with Middle-earth and for those who are lifelong fans!

So, graphic novels seem to either tell the story through the art, tell it with good art and story, or go the route of this rendering of the Hobbit and tell it with a whole lotta words and art that seems a bit of an afterthought. Don’t get me wrong, when it comes to Tolkien, we all want the text-it’s great. And the art here is simple and doesn’t pull away from the story. At times it’s bit jumbled (when Bilbo initially gets separated from his dwarven companions in the mountain with the goblins) and it certainly isn’t overly compelling, but it works. I’d like to see a version that has a more dramatic depiction such as the art by Donato Giancola who illustrated the cover of this edition. Still can’t beat this terrific tale.

I read this book a few years ago when I got into the Lord of the Rings movies. Right now, I'm listening to it as a book on CD which is awesome. The fellow reading it is doing some great different voices for the dwarves and Gandolf and everyone. Just love this simple, yet complex tale which leads into so much more in Tolkien's world. I have such admirable respect for Bilbo upon listening to the story and seeing the new movie version. I had always thought of him as fussy sort, but now I truly respect his adventurous persona. I adore Tolkien's works!

The little guy with big hairy feet goes on an adventure with creatures that have nads of excessive weight, and gets nads of his own. He traverses the world he knows to parts yet unknown, gets lost in an underworld of sorts, matches wits with the witless, and keeps a precious, endless, golden secret. He overcomes minions, and saves the ones who tease him and finds his place in the scheme of things. He overcomes amazing obstacles, and diligence his small size vanquishes the enemy. Life is an amazing thing.
