As someone who enjoys reading history, I find the greatest challenge to a satisfying read can be in wading through the quotes. That is because earlier times had flowery, rather windy ways of writing and talking. The American Revolution presents such a challenge; in the wrong hands it can come off as a rather dull, dry affair. Richard Wheeler avoids this problem; his book offers a variety of first-person accounts without forgetting it will be read by people more than two centuries removed from these events. I found the accounts of battles quite exciting and the accounts well-selected, particularly those of a New York Tory who comments acidly on the unfolding conflict. Reading this book gives you a clear picture of the high drama of our war for independence.
