I have to confess that I was a little biased in selecting this book as the next one for me to read. I thought it a good idea to get some ideas from the man that did so much to transform the company that employs me today. The GE of today is not the GE that Jack built, and yet in many ways it is in that Jack Welch provided the foundation for the culture that exists in the company today. A lot of what I see at work made so much more sense after reading what Jack wrote.

I say Jack because I felt almost like he was sitting down with me in a one-on-one setting, giving me his opinion about all things business in a rather personal setting. OK, perhaps not ALL things business, but he covers the main topics. And his approach was always down to earth and straightforward, which is just the way I like to do things. Here's a good example: "Be granular---know what each competitor eats for breakfast." More good examples: "You are not a leader to win a popularity contest--you are a leader to lead." "What good is beating targets you set in a windowless room?" "In real life, strategy is actually very straightforward. You pick a general direction and implement like hell." "Protecting underperformers always backfires. The worst thing, though, is how protecting people who don't perform hurts the people themselves." "Life goes on. There is no last best deal." "Every manager in the world knows what 'I resigned' or 'I left for personal reasons' really means." "Generally speaking, bosses are not awful to people whom they like, respect, and need. Think hard about your performance."

And my personal favorite: He subtitles his chapter on crisis management with "From Oh-God-No to Yes-We're-Fine".

Some of the higher-up executive realm discussions did not interest me as much because I don't frequent those higher-up executive realms. I'm one of the grunt peons. But I always found his perspective interesting. Even more interesting was his perspective on the topics that grunt peons such as myself know very well.

Perhaps the best example from this category was the chapter on work-life balance. I am a huge believer in balance, and many people have had their shots at perpetuating a "perfect" vision of acheiving work-life balance. But after reading what Jack had to say about it, I came to realize that all the other people I ever heard talk about work-life balance did so from the employee's perspective. Jack does it from the employer's perspective, and I found that much more enlightening because it broadened my view of what exactly I am trying to achieve. Balancing work and life is really balancing what my employer wants with what I want. Jack also gives some best practices that, true to his style as illustrated by the previous quotes, are very practical in nature.

Overall, this book was a great read, not just because it helped me to understand a lot of the culture in my own workplace but also because Jack practices the candor that he preaches. His ideas are grounded in experience, and when he says that he doesn't know something completely, he tells you exactly that. I highly recommend this book to anyone. It's more than just food for thought; it's food for making a career that is part of a well-lived life.

Welch show that the right decisions are often the hard decisions. He explain how leadership is different than many think.

In one passage he says that when you are an individual contributor you are paid to be an expert, to be the smartest guy in the room, to have the answers. When you become a manager, it needs to be okay to not be the smartest guys in the room. You need to be the guys asking the challenging questions.

He also affected me by explaining why you need to trust your gut. I never gave gut instinct much credit. Too touchy feely for me. He suggest that gut is simply pattern match on years of experience. That resonated with me.

This book talked to me. You may you also.

I really enjoyed this book and I am glad I picked it up. In 'Winning' two things happened that made this book an exceptionally powerful read: a business leader and guru of 40 years (Jack Welch) tag-teamed with a compelling wordsmith (Suzy Welch) to create what, to me, turned out to be a four nights streetwise MBA!

If you haven't read this book and you really want to know what works in business, minus all the bulls**t that normally accompanies business books - put this one on your to-read 2017-list - sooner is better than later.

Warren Buffet couldn't have put it better: after this, "No other management book will be needed." However, I can't wait to get my hand on the duo's 2015 release: "The Real Life MBA: Your No-BS Guide to Winning the Game, Building a Team and Growing Your Career."

Of course, you can add this one to your library!

Found it quite fascinating as how Jack ran such large global corporation which a clear target of keeping it either top or second best in all categories they are operating in. Absolutely liked his approach on various aspects, can't expect such things with more clarity, understanding, context. Thank you Jack!

4. Leaders establish trust with candor, transparancy, and credit

7. Leaders inspire risk taking and learning by setting the example.

A great business book for leaders, wonna-be leaders, or anyone in the business world. I liked how humble and respectful Jack in telling his stories, successes and failures alike. It gave me a great perspective on a number of things I always wanted explanations for. One of those is work-life balance. Definitely a great read.

Jack Welch, one of the greats, dishes out a lot of practical wisdom in this book. He gives advice on all parts of the business from HR, M&A, competition, etc. He also gives advice from the perspective of management and from the perspective of the employee.

I found him to be a very caring leader but also at the same time a very serious businessman. It’s true, he was known for cutting out the weak or laggards throughout his long tenure. Even though he didn't try to hide the fact that he was strictly business, and that being moral and honest is absolutely critical to success, as well as being right in itself – I’m curious as to how he would act in the really difficult situations in business where the lines between right and wrong are blurred, especially in emerging markets where GE has found a lot of success.

He strikes me as a great person, honest of his shortcomings, but I believe there has got to be a lot more to the man that what he tells in his book. Anyhow, assumptions aside, he gives advice on complicated matters in a simple way for a business to be successful. I highly respect a business leader like him, who is the personification of what a great CEO is supposed to be.

The book has a lot of great insights (and even more anecdotes). I think I picked the book up at the right time for me. It wouldn't have added much value if I had read it earlier in my career.
I'll suggest picking up this book when strategy, governance, and recruiting of seniors is a recurring pattern on your to-do list.

Winning by Jack Welch and Suzy Welch was a book I would have selected myself. I got this book to my bookshelf while ago and decided to take it with me to a business trip. Book is about Jack Welch thoughts and for that reason book review is also mainly about Jack Welch.

Book itself is written in okay way and it's quite easy to read. Jack Welch is not that controversial person, but his position in business world has been so unique that I think his experience and thoughts are really suitable only for handful of people in the world. Years heading GE there where always 300 000 - 400 000 people working for him. That's quite unusual.

It's pretty hard to criticize a man who raised company value 4000% in 20 years. Still it's hard to say how much of the success is really coming from him. As an example, he mentioned in the book that he has experience in over 1000 acquisitions. If you count that those are from 20 years, when he was the CEO, it would mean 4 acquisitions in a month. With that kind of frequency his contribution to those must have been quite small.

I did enjoy some parts of the book. I love the way he tries to raise the importance of HR and hiring. He gives good tips about hiring and detecting the talent.

For me the best thing about this book was, that there is and will be people who are all about money and power. This book helps understanding them. I don't really want to work with them or become one of them, but once in a while I might need to. It's always good to understand different people, no matter how differently you value things.

If you don't read a lot, I recommend to skip this book. I only finished it due to being in airplane without having anything better to do. It's not an important book so pick something else to read.
