This was entertaining but the mystery aspect was weak - basically just an excuse for Dirk Gently to be involved in the story. Dirk was never a nice person but he seems worse in this book than he did in the previous one - making the nonappearance of his friends from the first book understandable.
Basic Plot: Dirk Gently investigates an "act of God" that leaves him wondering which god was behind it.
Not as funny as the first book, but definitely just as interesting, especially with the addition of the Asgardian gods. This book may have been my first real introduction to that pantheon, and colored my reading of a lot of books as I expanded my literary knowledge. I think I need to re-read this one soon.
Not the best of Doogie, but not the absolute worst either. The random, all-over-the-place approach that worked for his most popular work, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, does not, unfortunately, work for this book. The pacing is off in many places, while the ending is rushed in a way that suggests someone was probably holding a gun to his head or withholding the next payment (which is often more effective than one, and infinitely less messier. You have no idea how tough it is to get brains off the walls without leaving a mark). Still a largely enjoyable read, but people who don't absolutely love Marvin would be better off finding another entry point into the mad, mad world of Douglas Adams.
I first read this book in the late 1980s and I completely loved it. Even more than Douglas Adams' better known series, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
In some ways it's quite dated. Answering machines, no cell phones, no GPS, smoking in public, record players. But for all of that it still works which is testament to the genius of Douglas Adams.
Such a weird book. I don't...I don't even know exactly what it was that I just read. But I know that I enjoyed every single page of it's sarcastic, hilarious, bizarreness.
No, sorry. I'd have to be a great deal more bored than I am with my life to finish listening to this. It might be funnier read in print, because the reader seemed bored by the whole thing as well.
The Dirk Gently books don't get the same amount of love as Adams' Hitchhiker series, but I'm not quite sure why. Upon a re-read, I actually enjoyed this more than the first Gently book, both of which are very funny and should be manna from heaven to fans of Adams' more popular novels. If the Hitchhiker books made you laugh, you will probably like this. 4 stars, recommended!
Continuing Dirk Gently's adventures takes us further into DNAs universe with his absurdist, surreal humor that only he could conjure up, almost at will.
It's a great book, but ultimately I doubt I'll reread it. I love all of the ideas and there's something about how Douglas Adams constructs sentences that is just brilliant, but it's just missing something of the spark that Hitchhiker's has
I wrote in my review of the Swedish version that it's not all the way as good as the first Dirk Gently - and then I gave it 5 stars and placed it on my favourites shelf. The English original text is, of course, better.
