It's the most hilariously bunkers British piece of modern literature that you'll stumble upon. Pick it up if you do, for your own sake...

Much better than the last book, there was a lot more action, space adventure and silly humour.
I loved Arthur and the whole sandwich making thing he had going on, it was hilarious, his interactions with Random were quite funny too.
I didn't like Ford all that much though, his parts dragged and he just wasn't very entertaining.
The ending was a tad depressing with what happened to all the Earths. I guess it was better to end in that way because then the gang would forever travel in space/time, and would never stop having mad adventures.

It’s been a while since I read hitchhikers guide to the galaxy so it was nice to read about the universe where everything can and does happen. Had some laughs here, and that’s always appreciated!

While much better than it's reputation, I don't think anybody can say that this was a worthy end to the 'Guide'-series (Adams himself certainly did not). The voice and style of the series creator is still here, but the story and mood is both bleaker and a lot darker than the predecessors'.

What the number of books to read if you want the ultimate hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy-experience is depends on who you ask; some say go with parts 1 and 2 - these where the ones that was based on the original story (radio show scripts). Some will argue parts 1-3, because at one point this was dubbed a trilogy. Again others will go with 1-4, including part 4 because that is really good, and excluding this one (part 5) on the basis that the author was not happy with it. 1-5 is an easy one: the original author's all books. I suppose, some would say include Eoin Colfer's And Another Thing..., but even if that one was an OK try, I wouldn't really take these people seriously. The 'mad competists' would almost certainly throw in the short Young Zaphod Plays It Safe and, for good measure The Salmon of Doubt, since we don't know if parts of that would not have made it into the 'Guide'-story had fate wanted differently.

If you ask me? The answer would probably depend on my mood, but really, it would probably bring the counter question "How much time have you got?", since I would not want to be without anything Douglas Adams wrote.

The Swedish edition is the first in the series not being translated by Thomas Tidholm and, while the translation isn't necessarily bad, it is different, and I would really recommend reading this one in original language (or as a 5-star translation into language of choice of course).

I get why some people don't like this book, however, I didn't read it. I listened to it on audio and I think Martin Freeman bringing all of these characters to life over the books really made it possible for me to enjoy the story more than if I had just read it on paper.

If you have a few hours to kill in a day (or are doing a lot of driving), get the audiobooks. Martin does a brilliant job at giving every character a voice, especially Arthur (which I would hope seeing as he played him in the movie). While he's no Alan Rickman, he still makes Martin moody, depressed, and as woe-is-me as ever.

Now there's a neat ending, if I ever read one.

It was brilliant, however bleak. I could not find in here (in the fifth and last book of the "trilogy") quite so much of the beloved cuckoo sense of humor that made his books always so irresistible to me. However, I did appreciate the proper science fiction-y feeling to it, which was of course well done, having been produced by the magnificent imagination of Douglas Adams.

I miss you and I regret never having met you, Mr. Adams. I hope they have good tea, wherever you are.

The new Guide was an amazing villain! So much potential. Could have a whole other book series all to itself.

This book is really bleak, but thoughtfully so.
Nothing makes sense, and everything makes sense.
In the very end scene where it seems everyone and everything dies, the last thing Ford Prefect does is throw back his head and n  laugh.n
Apparently, Douglas Addams had a bad year while writing this.

Many, many people on here rate this book extremely low, which I feel is unfair.
The whole point of hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy is that everything is hilariously silly n  andn extremely thoughtful and nihilistic
I think most people are lulled into a false sense of security by the humour of this series.
The end all and be all is that everything dies in the end, and hardly anything makes sense.
That's what this book is.
This book explored the deeper aspects of the hitchhiker's trilogy that needed to be explored.
We needed the different dimensions and plural zones of earth explored, along with some fleshing out of the character of Arthur Dent.
Some new things were added, that felt, shall we say, n  Randomn (literally).
Douglas Addams was going to write a sixth book in the hitchhiker's trilogy but died before he could start on it.
As Zaphod didn't appear at all in ”Mostly harmless” it did feel to me like this was not truly the end.
There were a few things that were unmentioned that felt like they were being saved for another book..
“And another thing” by Eon Colfer picks up the story where Addams was unable to, with Zaphod saving the gang in the nick of time and a whole new adventure unfurling.

I enjoyed the bleakness of this book, I can't quite explain why.
The grebulon captain showing all the signs of a classic Taurus and deciding to blow up the earth, in a confused state of amnesia and loneliness– just seemed to sum up the whole feeling of this book for me.
On a brighter note:
Throughout the sad state of the universe and Arthur Dent's feted attempts to find earth again, is Ford Prefect.
Ford Prefect spends the majority of the book being angry about the sad and lamented loss of his favourite shoes and buying as much as he can via his company card after they demoted him to restaurant critic.
n  n    "Why, how much did you tip him?'
Ford named a figure again.
'I don't know how much it is,' said Arthur. 'What's it worth in pounds sterling? What could it buy you?'
'It would probably buy you, roughly... er...' Ford screwed his eyes up as he did some calculations in his head. 'Switzerland,' he said at last.”

n

Ford is the light of this book, and when Ford and Arthur are reunited, it becomes really enjoyable, back to the og components that make up the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.
n  n    "Anything that happens, happens.
Anything that, in happening, causes something else to happen, causes something else to happen.
Anything that, in happening, causes itself to happen again, happens again.

It doesn’t necessarily do it in chronological order, though."

PLEASE DON’T!

To anyone reading this, I'm going to tell you something I wish someone had told me before going forward. STOP HERE, don't read #5, you'll regret it for the rest of your life. #4 is a nice HEA ending for the series. This one isn't. Please! Don’t do this to yourself!

But if you must... then here it goes.

Arthur Dent crashes on remote planet Lamuella. Fenchurch lost to some weird space time inconsistency. Stranded, alone, he decides to rebuild his life becoming the local Sandwich Maker. Life seems quiet again for a time, until Trillian arrives with a mysterious teenage child. Random, Arthur’s secret daughter. Things are about to get complicated again.

I HATED THIS WITH ALL MY HEART. I’ll never forgive what Adams did to Fenchurch. I was hoping through all the book she would return, but she never did. Damn you Adams!  But that’s not enough is it? Let’s not forget what he already did to Marvin. I read this so long ago I don’t remember how I felt about Random. And Trillian, well… who? Ford was there for a time, so that’s good, I guess. Zaphod was not, thank god. And a special mention for Agrajag, my heart goes for that unlucky villain.

And regarding the ending. Gosh! THAT ENDING! Who does that? Seriously Adams. WTF!

n  PERSONAL NOTEn: It should be noted that apparently Douglas Adams was suffering from severe depression at the time of writing this. But still... dude!

Zaphod no, gracias a Dios.

¡hombre!

Hitchhiker's, volume 5.

There are some good lines in this, but I can't help feeling it would have been better if Adams had left it unwritten, or at least unpublished. It is very disjointed, with Ford, Arthur and Trillian mostly in separate stories.

It starts in what would be a parallel universe - if such things existed, which they don't, because "it makes as much sense as the sea being parallel".

"If there was one thing life had taught her it was that there are times when you do not go back for your bag and other times when you do. It had yet to teach her to distinguish between the two types of occasion".

"The messages that one part of her brain was busy sending to another were not necessarily arriving on time or the right way up".

"For something she hadn't expected... it wasn't going the way she expected".

Maximegalon Institute of Slowly and Pointlessly Working out the Surprisingly Obvious.

The future is "just the same old stuff in faster cars and smellier air".

"It occupied the same co-ordinates in space time [as Earth:]. What co-ordinates it occupied in probability was anyone's guess".

"The sun was quite bright but the day was hazy and vague".

"A common mistake... when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools".

"Her mood swings were very unpredictable but so far they'd all been between different types of bad ones... She had been sent as a test of his faith, if not his patience".

AmEx "gave cards exclusively to just about anybody".

"about three other customers... it was not the kind of place that you felt like being that specific in".

"The possible continually interfered with the probable".
