When I tried to get my fix of Douglas Adams last year, I reached for Mostly Harmless -- and was a little underwhelmed. This should have been my first pick; I have my fix now.
I recently re-read Dirk Gently, since the first time I read it was in the seventh or eighth grade, and so I really didn't remember much of it. I must say it is absolutely fantastic. It is one of the few books which as I read it I was imagining what you could do for a film version. I think it would be a fantastic work to bring to the big screen, particularly after the modest success of Hitchhiker's...
That said, I love Douglas Adams. The man was a genius at creating characters, and the Gently series might be more endeared to me than the Hitchhiker's.
I loved The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and had high hopes for Dirk Gently, but this novel just didn't quite do it for me. Its plot is a weak. This wouldn't have been an issue if it had been packed with quotably witty lines like Hitchiker's Guide was, but it is not. There are still some good bits, to be sure, but the laughs are sparse.
I don’t know if it’s me, but I found it very difficult getting immersed in the book. It took me reading about half of it before I was invested in the story and the characters. But now, I can’t wait to read what’s next!
