Despite having just finished this book, I'm not sure I'm qualified to review it.. Why would that be? Well it appears to be a somewhat parody of the trials and tribulations of the biblical character Job. Not being an expert on this subject I can't say whether or not it adequately achieves this aim, but what I can say is that it starts out as an exciting sci-fi story, a character slipping between parallel worlds, then gets bogged down and so heavily muddled with religion and preaching that I nearly put it down and left it there. For the sake of the author I continued and am happy to say it gets better towards the end and ultimately resolves satisfactorily. Maybe a missed opportunity here but still well written and engaging, if you can get past all the religious stuff.
It starts out like a season of the TV show Sliders, then morphs into Anne Rice's Memnoch the Devil as we take a guided tour around the afterlife. The impressive part is that Heinlein's work precedes both of these. JOB is a cute look at social norms and philosophy masked as a road trip/ quest story.
This is a funny, irreverent take on God and religion in which God is the villain and Satan the good guy. That will offend many people, but if you can set aside Judeo-Christian belief and accept the tale on it's own merits it is a rewarding journey. Highly recommended.
