A Christmas gift from my Mum. I read this when I was a teenager and loved it so much. I am a bit daunted by 972 pages!

Wonderful, exciting, riveting book! I only have ONE complaint about it: The author used "but nevertheless" many times. Bless her heart, I'll forgive that grammatical error because the story was so, so, so GOOD! Read it! Amber is an English Scarlett O'Hara of the late 1600s.

SPOILERS!!!

"Forever Amber" was one of those books I was refraining to read because I was considering it to be just an ordinary love-jealousy story. However, when my grandma gave me her old books for my birthday I had no other option but to start reading. When your grandma gives you her favourite books you read them.
So, I started reading critically but from the very first page I immersed in the book. I was reading all the time, I pretty much stopped doing my regular chores for the sake of reading one more page, and one more page, and one more page.... I realised that "Forever Amber" is much more that a boulevard novel. What was most precious for me in the book was its historical accuracy. While reading I was checking the different characters and events just to understand how much of the story was true. Well, apparently apart from Amber the story is very much true in the sense of historical events.
However, there were two things I did not like. First, I was expecting to read more details about Amber and Charles II's relationship. After all, one of Amber's aims was to become part of the Royal Court, to be a mistress to the King, and to have power and money. But the author didn't really delve into their story. Perhaps a few more dialogues and expression of feelings between them would've made the storytelling more intense.
The second thing I did not like was the end. After all, Amber is a character that has passed through so much and it seems unbelievable to me that at the end she would fall a victim to such a simple trick. I really expected some more maturity. Just like I was expecting some more maturity and responsibility from Bruce.
At the end of the day though the author has managed to show what the deep and blind love can do to a reasonable human being. Now I'm off to finally read "Gone with the Wind" and I'm already hooked!

Not an awful book. Not the sweeping epic it's advertised to be.

Honestly, I know the title of the book is Forever Amber but I would have loved if the author wrote just about the court of Charles II. I didn't need all of the other stuff about Amber. However, I would love a story about what happens next.

Still trying to figure out what it was about this book that had it on banned lists in some cities when it was first published. There were lots of suggestions with very few actions.

And Bruce? Seriously? At first I thought Amber was the stupid one. Nope. Turns out when it comes to one Bruce Carlton, all women are stupid. That guy was a complete douche but I guess he was really, really hot because women were constantly dropping their petticoats for him.
