You are a rookie asociate at a quiet but good paying firm, top three out of Harvard school and all you want to do is get rich and retire early and all of a sudden the F.B.I. contacts you, what would you do? A book has the power to make you believe things and change your opinion on other things. This book makes you think differently about small firms at small towns that no one really worries about. This book takes you to a different level of thinking and has many unbelievable things yet it still stays realistic and you wonder if that can actually happen. The Firm by John Grisham is a kind of a law thriller book with a mysterious and suspenseful feeling that gives you a different look on small quiet firms that pay really good money.

Mitch Y. McDeere is a kid with almost no family other than a brother at jail and an alcoholic mother and finally got out of Harvard in the Top 3. He has the choice between any firm especially those big ones in New York but he chooses one in Memphis with high salary, many gifts, and a turnover of zero which they are really proud of and Mitch is about to find out why. Then the F.B.I. contacts the rookie and Mitch gets stuck between the F.B.I. who want secrets and information from this really rich firm but really small firm which doesn’t make sense and the firm itself, who can make him a very rich man, or a very dead man. An excerpt from the book that illustrates the importance of family is, “‘Why should the firm care if we have children?’ ‘Again, stable families. A new baby is a big deal around the office. They send flowers and gifts to the hospital. You’re like a queen. You husband gets a week off, but he’ll be too busy to take it. They put a thousand dollars in a trust fund for college. It’s a lot of fun.’”

If you like this book, you may also like The Associate by John Grisham because this is a book about a lawyer straight out of law school just like Mitch and is now in the largest firm in the world. He is a good lawyer and a hard worker but he has this dark secret that falls into the hands of the wrong people that makes him steal, lie and take part in a scheme that could get him in prison, if not killed. I rate this book 5 out of 5 because it is very suspenseful and very believable. The author does a really good job on making you want to keep turning the page and being suspenseful, but he also did a really good job on making you think that even though those things are really crazy, it can happen.

Terrifically exciting and likable book.

Grisham's gripping fiction debut describes the inner workings of a law firm set up by the Mafia to launder money and concoct tax evasions. He does not cut as deep or furnish the occasional shining paragraph that Scott Turow does, but he writes a stripped, cliche-free page that grips and propels.
How does the American Dream relate to the trait of acquisitiveness, and how does this character with a Ben Franklin-style work ethic become seduced by the firm, are questions that can open up discussion of The Firm into a debate on what Americans consider to be personal success.

You will be totally hooked by this unusual and absorbing story.

The book that put John Grisham on the map (his second published book) involves new tax attorney, Mitch McDeere. He's being heavily courted by a fancy tax law firm in Mississipi that pays handsomely. Strangely, the firm doesn't have anybody quit. McDeere and his young wife, Abby, must chose from joining an enigmatic firm who is willing to give him a new BMW and cover his law debts over a Wall Street firm. McDeere takes the job with the firm and it's not long before he finds out what really happens at the firm.

While this thriller takes awhile to get going (it's like 30% of the book before anything really dramatic starts happening), it has great atmosphere and foreshadowing early on. I felt like I was on McDeere's shoulder trying to whisper in his ear, "Don't join the firm!" but he wouldn't listen. Reading was like riding the roller coaster up to the top of the giant hill and knowing what's coming. It's been many years since I've seen the movie with Tom Cruise so I forgot some of the details. The book was entertaining and deserving of the praise. I didn't love it like I did A Time to Kill, perhaps because there isn't any actual courtroom drama or deep character studies. Also, I like legal thrillers containing at least some dramatic courtroom scenes and there wasn't any here. However, taking it as a straight-up crime thriller involving a lawyer as the protagonist, it's still a very entertaining read.

The dialogue sings, there is some decent characterization although I felt that McDeere was a bit too good at avoiding the bad guys--teetering on implausible a couple times. Also, I sort of missed the importance of a minor character who becomes more major later in the book. Had to go back and read her character introduction to fully understand her heightened in the plot involvement. Overall, a strong 4.25 stars. 7,016 of 7,424 Kindle locations (story ends at 94% of 100%, with last 6% being an excerpt for The Litigators)

It's just one of those things. I love this novel. Twice read, once watched, and now once listened to on audio. Don't ask me what the attraction is. I wish I knew.

Brilliant suspense thriller.

DNF at 100 pages

Meh. Three problems:

1) Ridiculous and kind of cliche
2) Obsesses over how much money/ how much work the characters do
3) The Firm is definitely not my kind of book

For some very odd reason, I was expecting a brilliant, exciting dystopian novel about corrupt companies (a little like the premise of The Wind-Up Girl) that examines... philosophical stuff about governments. I knew very little about the premise, and read it because it was recommended to me by a smart person (which supported my theory or something.) Of course I was extremely wrong.

I need to stop making so many assumptions.

My first Grisham book I read. I was expecting my first child and my husband walked in. The characters were just figuring out how to escape the situation they were in without being caught... no spoilers here - I was SO in the book that when I came back to present, my legs were jelly! I honestly don't think I could have gotten up from my chair. '') This was a really good read. I enjoyed the suspense, and after reading this one, I have read most of John Grisham's books.
