A fine novel which I've read several times and also listened to on CD. It tells how a person who, through no fault of his own, finds himself in a desperate situation with seemingly no escape but manages to find one. An old theme for which Grisham created a new twist, he being a master of that genre. The film version is, unfortunately, wanting.

My opinion on this book is:

I think the book is exciting when you get over a 100 pages. I didn’t really want to read before I was about a hundred pages. But after that it grabbed me and I really wanted to read more. It is a large book and I personally don’t like that, but there was something that kept me reading. At the end it had an unexpected plot and I really liked that. It wasn’t easy to read but the story was told really nice. Sometimes there was a paragraph of law-stuff with difficult words I really didn’t understood, but I just skipped those parts.

Welcome to the fascinating work of tax law - fast money, fast cars and fast women. If only I was good at maths and then I too could join the fun at Bendini, Lambert and Locke.

Pretty good thriller but ending was a bit of a let down.

Time to watch the film adaptation starring Tom Cruise - woohoo

Well first of all I m a true Grisham fan ! I have read many of his books and believe me he is one of the greatest crime writers.
However while reading this book I do have some complaints or rather there were some loopholes which weren't properly addressed in the book.
For instance, knowing the power of the Morolto family and the FBI how can three people go unnoticed on a ship with the help of a fellow friend?
Also, what about the infidelity story of McDeere? That didn't seem to have an ending?
And we are talking about mafia's here, why wouldn't they harm someone's parents if they could help get to McDeere?
The story, the plot in its entirety is really beautiful and a good read. The story builds up pretty nicely in the middle with the McDeere coming to know about the crime and everything. Truly marvellous but once the race begins with the FBI and the mafia and Mitchell takes on his own is where the problem begins. It's difficult to comprehend a person taking 12000 printouts. ( if the information is secretive enough, it wouldn't be in paper- for when the time comes to destroy it; it would rather be extremely difficult for the mafia family) none the less since its a 1991 book, I agree that records could not be maintained in computer files.

I still would recommend everyone to read this book. It's definitely a page turnover but for a person who is into a lot of crime fiction or has read tons of books about it- it would be like just another normal crime writing.
Enjoy readers !!

I first read this book around 18 years back and remember it as a thrilling experience, but couldn't recollect the story. And that is why i sat down for a re-read.
Was it a thrilling experience? Ya definitely it was. But i think the book shows its age. It was the story of a time when phones were stuck on the wall. The news moved at a snail pace compared to today.
And the timeline of the story was not written into the novel, so the readers are bound to feel a disconnect. It was a novel written for the people to read at a certain point of time and sorry to say it did fail the test of time.
Now looking back, I should not have re read it... Because this was supposed to be one of my favourite thrillers.... From John Grisham...
As an after thought, there where too many coincidences and lucky breaks... And all this made me reduce the 4 stars to 3 stars

From my personal view, this is the best legal thriller. Right from the start, you have a feeling you are in for a great ride, and the more you read the more intense and enjoyable this ride gets. This book is written in an excellent unique way, and the information within is a good teaching as well. So detailed, you can feel yourself immersed in every story line.

Top of my list upto this date.

Good early Grisham legal thriller. The Firm - you can get in, but not out. The offer to young Mitch by a Memphis law firm sounds too good to be true. The skeletons in the closet are plenty - and dangerous.

He and his young wife must become creative when squeezed between sinister forces and the government.

I almost read this book in one sitting but I had to go pick the kids up from school. It took me back to the good old days when I was a legal secretary and I watched the goings on in the elite lawfirms, the politically annointed and the fast trackers. It's easy to assume that a former broke, struggling law student who had nothing but the law would enjoy his new life and all it's trappings but, in the end, it was the law he chose. This is the first Grisham book I read and have read each one in order as they came out which my husband finds amusing but at least he knows what book to buy.

I don't think they botched the movie too much but, as usual, couldn't put all the nitty, gritty details in the movie that the book contains. Some people go ballistic when they make a movie of their favorite book but I get a kick out of seeing who they cast and what messes they make out of the script. It's usually so far removed from the book, you having nothing to compare it to. I don't take it personally and think the book stands well on its own. I've yet to see a movie surpass a book.

Loved reading this book. I can tell why this is the book that made Grisham into the household name he is today. Great story (that is slightly unrealistic at times but still very captivating) that keeps the reader on their toes and keeps the pages turning day in and day out. Definitely recommend this to anyone.

I'm quite surprised reading this because I thought this book will be like The Litigators (the first Grisham book that I've read) wherein the focus will be the courtroom and a trial. However, this book is about this rookie tax lawyer who was hand-picked to work in this law firm in Memphis. The firm gave him a high salary, a house with a low interest mortgage and a brand new car. He was offered a lot of material things and because he was not that rich he accepted the offer. Later on he found out that the firm was secretly governed by the Mafia and the law firm was only a facade. He cooperated with the FBI and he tried to gather evidence, but in the end the firm knew about what was he doing and then it became a chase in the end when he escaped the firm.

Even though I am a little bit disappointed because I wanted a plot focused on courtroom dramas this book is still thrilling and has a strong message (money is not everything and will not make you happy). Also, I like John Grisham because compared to Jodi Picoult his novels are centered on lawyers not the clients. I'm looking forward to read more of his works.
