I have strong feelings and opinions related to this book that delves deeper into the issue of "an eye for an eye" as it relates to the judicial systems of the day. A great side story about a member of the KKK after the civil war during the segragation conflict. Being from a rural southern area, riding around as a child with a father who always kept a "nigger knocker" under the seat, and having family that still refuses to grasp the concept of nonjudgmental equality, I really thought this book showed the true side of descriminatin and reverse discrimination that could cause one to reflect on their belief system regarding the death penalty.

I kept waiting for something to happen, really no action at all, mostly character descriptions and backstory. There was very little of this book that I enjoyed and I will never read it again. I am a huge fan of John Grisham, but I did not like this one and it seemed like torture to get to the ending.

I loved this book. Never have I had such a distinct love/hate impression of a character before. It is long but you NEVER know how it will end. Its easy to finish it quickly.

Normally, I am fan of John Grisham. I found The Chamber very disappointed. The pace of the story was slow. It seemed like novel wasn't edited very well. I didn't find the characters very compelling. Overall, the book was poor.

I wanted to give this book a 5-star rating because it gave an in-depth view of what it's like to be on death row waiting for the gas chamber, but it went on too long and could have been more exciting due to some other plot lines. It was very well written and kept my interest regardless.

Not as entertaining as other Grisham books. It’s a somber subject – death row.

STORY BRIEF:
Three Ku Klux Klansmen plant a bomb in an attorney’s office. Two children are killed. Only one of the men (Sam) is caught, and he stays silent about the other two. It is years later. Sam is on death row, soon to be executed in “the (gas) chamber.” Adam is a young attorney with a large law firm up north. He gets permission from his firm to work on Sam’s case pro bono. He is Sam’s grandson. Adam and Sam now meet for the first time. The story is mostly about their interaction and Adam’s attempts to stop the execution.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
This is my fifth Grisham book. It wasn’t as enjoyable as the others. I was frustrated that Sam wouldn’t help himself by giving up names of others. But I understood his motive. He feared for the safety of his relatives. The plot might be interesting for some, but I wasn’t entertained. I wanted a fulfilling or happy ending which I didn’t get. Readers who want to contemplate death penalty issues might like this.

DATA:
Copyright: 1994. Setting: mostly 1967 and 1990 Mississippi. Genre: death row legal fiction.

Iako je tema knjige odlična, mislim da je jako opširna uz dosta nepotrebnih opisa i da bi bilo puno bolje da je knjiga manje obimna. Radnja je dosta spora što ubija čar čitanja.

Another great Grisham read. Just don’t read enough of them. This focusses on a KKK member whose bomb killed the two young children of a Jewish lawyer back in the ‘60’s. He is on death row awaiting execution by gas.

The story covers the last four weeks and his defence by a young attorney who is in fact the man’s grandson.

Grisham is able to make you feel sorry for Sam Kayhall and his racist attitudes and certainly to reject the death penalty as a means of ‘annulling the crime.’

I remembered the opening chapters as must have seen the original film. But that was all I remembered as I was on tenterhooks to the end.

When I started this book I thought it will be an another page-turner John Grisham stereotype, but the book turned out to be an intense novel with some earnest opinions about the man made judicial system.John raised that very question once again "should death be the ultimate punishment?".The novel is about a death row inmate Sam who is counting his last days for being a minor accomplish of a 23 year old klan bombing but took all the responsibilities on his shoulder to hide the real
offender to keep his family safe. Suddenly his long lost grand kid Adam appeared who happened to be a talented young lawyer and tried to save his grand dad from being gassed by any means.A real nerve racking book which will make you go through a very painful experience, you feel like you are confined in the cell with the old Sam watching his agony right before your eyes, counting the days with him, like you are running side by side Adam from one court to another to stop the execution chasing the clock, expecting a miracle to happen. The most fearsome thing for a death row inmate is that everyday he dies a little. The countdown gets more and more intensified from month to days, days to hours, hours to minutes, minutes to seconds.....eating the last meal, saying the last prayer, giving the last hug, falling of the last tears and finally the chamber awaits.....What can the state gain from executing a 70 year old, may be to call it a good day for the law enforcement . Grisham got crafty while depicting the whole thing which made it more and more heartbreaking for the readers.Overwhelming emotions, moist eyes after a long time these things happened to me from reading a book.Captivating the readers in a 700 page heartbreaking book needs the master stroke and there he was,the one and only John Grisham...........

Typically I am a Sci-fi/Fantasy reader, with a smattering of historical fiction thrown in. Really I'll read just about anything, but I have weakness for fairy tales. So when my dad recommended this book to me, and went as far as to buy it and give it to me, I was like... okay... But I decided to give it a chance because it's a book, and I like books.

And my response was: Wow. I have read very few things as heart stirring and thought provoking as this book. Who could like a KKK member? Murdering people is ALWAYS bad, right? And shouldn't people who murder people die? Before I read this book I would have said not me, yes, and yes, to each of those questions (respectively). Now though? I would say it depends, yes, and I don't know. I learned a lot about humanity. I also learned that the best ending isn't always the happiest one. Wow. This book is good. No matter what your typical genre is, take a break and give this book a chance.

The dilemma between good and bad. I like this kind of story. And coming from Mr. Grisham himself, I do not feel disappointed. I read this book long time ago and yet I still remember it fondly. It has been a while since I pick up Mr Grisham book since now I am on different genre.
