Charles Dickens was travelling with a group of vaguely identified comrades how much of what he wrote was personal or was it a joint effort. If he looked into the perpetuity of an insular people and the consequent degradation of whole communities. Dickens could surely have pointed the finger at what needed to be fixed. The Italians were governed by their past so reducing the power of the institutions was required. I am not interested in buildings more the people who surround them. This book to me is almost complete

The first half was a little on the dry side, but by the halfway mark things were picking up. Dickens can imbue buildings with personalities, and that is what stands out here, along with his observation of ridiculous people.

I almost finished this book, almost made myself read this disrespectful trail of words. Travel in the 19th century was not only difficult but dangerous. Why travel to a country where you have no intention of being respectful, thoughtful, meditative, expansive.

I am planning a trip to Italy and found this book on our bookshelves. I was bored reading Dickens' descriptions (and I am a Dickens fan), but was even less impressed with the collage artwork.

Read this in Italy, was really looking forward to it but sadly I couldn’t get into it at all. Will stick to his fiction

Κι εκεί που λες ότι διάβασες απλώς ένα καλαίσθητο βιβλιαράκι (εξαιρετική η έκδοση από την Κίχλη και η μετάφραση του Γιάννη Παλαβού) που περιλαμβάνει δύο περιγραφές για σεμινάριο (του καρναβαλιού στη Ρώμη και ενός δημόσιου αποκεφαλισμού στην ίδια πόλη) από ένα -μάλλον άγνωστο στο ελληνικό κοινό- ταξιδιωτικό έργο του Ντίκενς, έρχεται μια φράση στην τελευταία σελίδα που πραγματικά σε συνταράζει:

«Ο δήμιος -ένας εγκληματίας με τη βούλα του κράτους (τι ειρωνεία για τη Δικαιοσύνη!), ο οποίος τρέμοντας για τη ζωή του, δεν τολμά να διασχίσει τη γέφυρα Σάντ' Άντζελο παρά μόνο για να κάνει τη δουλειά του - ξαναγύρισε στο λαγούμι του και η παράσταση έλαβε τέλος.»

Not as good as his stories, but interesting nonetheless.

Some parts are very good. Venice. Vesuvius. Vatican. OK, The "V"'s are good. The rest is uneven.

Aprovechando que hace poco comenté una biografía literaria de Charles Dickens aquí en este mismo blog, voy a tomarlo como referencia para hablar, ahora sí de una sus últimas novelas publicadas, el libro de viajes “Estampas de Italia”. El propio escritor comenta en el prólogo inicial lo que serán sus intenciones con respecto a él:

“Este libro está compuesto por una serie de apuntes leves -meros reflejos en el agua- sobre lugares a los que la imaginación de la mayoría de la gente se siente, en mayor o menor medida, atraída, en los que la mía habitó durante muchos años y que suscitan el interés de todo el mundo.”

Nos encontramos, entonces, ante una obra en la que, como la mayoría de los libros de viajes, no importa tanto la trama sino el relato impresionista de los paisajes, de las gentes, de las costumbres y tradiciones, del país que se visita; en este caso aplicado a Italia.

Aún así, asistimos obnubilados a un Dickens sencillo en fondo pero igual de florido en la forma, no me atrevo a utilizar el adjetivo “menor”, ya que solamente por el estilo no creo que pueda ser considerado como tal, aunque sí se podría decir que es inferior a otras obras suyas.

De esta manera vamos avanzando por las ciudades italianas y asistimos a un relato donde el mayor placer está en la forma en que el autor inglés reflejó descriptivamente sitios en los que yo he estado igualmente.

Me regocijó especialmente el capítulo dedicado a Venecia: “Un sueño italiano”, donde asistimos a una de esas descripciones que estaban ya vivas en el recuerdo que tengo yo de mi ciudad italiana favorita:

“Mas junto a los muelles y las iglesias el agua no cesaba su movimiento succionando los muros de los palacios y las prisiones e inundando los lugares secretos de la ciudad. Silenciosa y vigilante, envuelta en sus múltiples pliegues como una vieja serpiente, esperando el momento en que la gente mirara al interior de sus profundidades, en busca de alguna piedra de la vieja ciudad que se jactaba de ser su señora.”

Cuánta belleza en un capítulo, cuánto placer hedonista al leer a este coloso de la literatura universal; que contrasta igualmente con todo lo malo de la ciudad de Fondi: “Un inmenso canal de lodo y desechos serpentea por el centro de sus miserables calles alimentado por obscenos riachuelos que salen de sus abyectas casas”.

El veredicto es que estamos ante una lectura ligera pero saludable, una manera fácil de descubrir a un escritor que no cansa ni siquiera en sus libros de viajes. Un comienzo para descubrirlo y luego lanzarse a por Pickwick o Historia de dos ciudades. ¿Por qué no?

The book was a tedious read, rendered laborious and perplexing by cascades of detailed and intricate descriptions of everything upon which Dickens' eyes alighted.

Unless such minute details—of a beggar's crooked nose, a richly caparisoned horse, weather-ravaged statues, and the ruined remnants of Roman architecture—contribute to the reader's understanding, appreciation, or even denunciation of Italy and her cities, such painfully exhaustive information merely serves to fray the nerves and distress the mind, which must exert considerable effort to follow the narrative.

This is a book that I would present to anyone whom I hold in great disdain.

An interesting travel book and views of Italy. Thisbook makes me want to save up and follow Dicken's path!
