Quote from ‘A Christmas Carol’
5 stars
—————————-
They went, the Ghost and Scrooge, across the hall, to a door at the back of the house. It opened before them, and disclosed a long, bare, melancholy room, made barer still by lines of plain deal forms and desks. At one of these a lonely boy was reading near a feeble fire; and Scrooge sat down upon a form, and wept to see his poor forgotten self as he had used to be.
Not a latent echo in the house, not a squeak and scuffle from the mice behind the panelling, not a drip from the half-thawed water-spout in the full yard behind, not a sigh among the leafless boughs of one despondent poplar, not the idle swinging of an empty store-house door, no, not a clicking in the fire, but fell upon the heart of Scrooge with a softening influence, and gave a freer passage to his tears.

I liked some of the other stories as well, but not all of them. I liked ‘A Christmas Carol’ most of all!

cute! i was warned a million times about dickens's wordiness, but i had no problem with it here. (i'm very wordy myself when writing, so it'd be hypocritical to hate it.)

this never fully grabbed my attention, but i never minded reading it. i've of course seen the story done before (community theater! the mickey cartoon! etc etc) so it wasn't fresh by any means, but i'm glad i read it.

bottom line: this is a good read-in-a-lifetime book! i recommend it.

When deciding to spend the whole year reading one Dickens book per month, the only book that was definitely connected to a particular month was this one.

I chose this edition because I like the black Penguin classics the best, but in case you’re wondering- if you only read “A Christmas Carol” you don’t really miss anything. I’m fairly certain this was the first time I actually read this - definitely the first time I read it in the original. And what struck me is that Dickens accomplished something truly rare for any artist - his creations have become so well known even outside of England (which can be said for a few of his books, but - without any evidence to back this up because it’s 2019 and feelings are facts - Scrooge is probably the most famous) and have become part of overall Christmas culture, which is kind of amazing. And it is a fun read - especially because for once, he keeps it short and tight, and it’s a very effective story.

The other writings collected in here are a bit of a miscellany. “The Haunted Man” felt like something I’ve heard before, but done better (although I did like the family with the many kids). The story with the goblins is an excerpt from “The Pickwick Papers” and there are four shorter, other bits that are kind of forgettable. I was surprised by “A Christmas Tree”, which was very evocative and brought up an incredible amount of memories. That was wild.

So. I’ve read 7722 pages of Dickens in 2019, which is a neat number. I can actually see myself getting an illustrated edition of just “A Christmas Carol”, because it did put me into the Christmas spirit, which can admittedly be difficult. I’m sure I’ll have other conclusions once I’ve read the remaining four (3.5) books on my list, but doing this has made me a better reader. Oddly enough, it hasn’t turned me into a Dickens fan - I enjoy reading his books and I think most are good, but apart from “David Copperfield” I don’t *love* them the way I love other books. But it’s a good experience.
