Kitabı ilk olarak Everest baskısından Oğuz Baykara çevirisi ile okudum. Başlarda bana güzel gelen ağdalı çevirisi ilerledikçe beni yormaya başladı ve kitaptan aldığım zevk azaldı. Kitap bittikten sonra internetten Dedalus baskısını buldum. Birde Piyale Perver çevirisi ile okudum kitabı. Ve inanılmaz tat aldım okurken. Oscar Wilde’ın yansıttığı hüzün ikinci okuyuşumda bana geçti.

Everest baskısı üzerinden puan verseydim daha düşük verirdim ama burada mesele Oscar Wilde olduğu için tabi ki de yayınevi gözeterek vermeyeceğim puanı. Çünkü Piyale Perver sağolsun ikinci okuyuşum gerçekten Wilde’ın karşıya geçirmek istediği duyguları hissetmemi sağladı. Ben açıkçası Dedalus çevirisinden okumanızı tavsiye ederim.

"No need to waste the foolish tear,
Or heave the windy sigh:
The man had killed the thing he loved,
And so he had to die.

And all men kill the thing they love,
By all let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word...

If I admire Oscar Wilde, as a person instead of an author, for any one of his works, it would be this. This work of poetry is written in a very simple manner, which can be easily grasped by anyone, and some might think of the rhyming structure to be serving to a younger audience, contrary to those of us who have read poetries qualifying as literary works, having a more mature structure. But none of this matters, when you know that all of this has been written out of the pain, torment and helplessness Wilde felt while spending two years being imprisoned and tortured through hard labour, because of acting upon his homosexuality. Wilde accounts all the events that had occurred during his imprisonment through the art of poetry. This is so beautiful in the most tragic way, and should be given the same importance as any other literary masterpiece. The ghastly conditions he suffered through for two years left such an impact on his health that he had passed away soon after being released.
I absolutely loved this work.

The list of writers from the Victorian Era features some of the greatest of all time. From Dickens and Thackeray, to Browning and Tennyson, to Eliot and the Brontes. But the most interesting of the lot for me would be Oscar Wilde, the one I would most like to meet if I could. What a brilliant writer. He wrote novels, plays, and poetry, and did it with a wit and style that is uniquely his own. But this poem, The Ballad of Reading Gaol, was one of his best works. It is haunting, and moving, and sad, and it is so different from what we come to expect from him. But he wrote this from personal experience, and you can feel his individual pain, and sorrow, and fear within the lines of the poem.

Oscar Wilde wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol after having spent two years in Reading prison for his homosexual relationship with a young man. From this traumatic experience Wilde emerged a destroyed man, who vented his anguish in this last magnificent work, and sought in spirituality a way to find peace. He condemned the inhuman conditions in which the prisoners were held: miserable men who were even denied the comfort of religion.

He wrote the poem in the form of a popular ballad as if he wanted to sing to people in the streets the story of human hypocrisy; to sing of Reading gaol that should have been a place of rehabilitation, but actually was only a place of punishment, a place that produced outcasts or prays for the scaffold, a hell on earth. I found in the following lines, some of the main concepts of the work:

…what should Human Pity do
Pent up in Murdere’s Hole?
What word of grace in such a place
Could help a brother’s soul?

Oscar Wilde died two years later, leaving the world deprived of one of the finest voices of literature.

Yaşadığım şehirde geçen kitabı okumak aslında güzeldi. Daha doğrusu ikinci kez okumak daha bir anlamlı idi. Hele ki bu kitabın sahibi Oscar Wilde ise. Oscar Wilde'ın Reading Hapishanesi'ndeki deneyimlerinden esinlenerek yazdığı bir tek şiir aslında bu eseri.

Wilde, hapishanede tanık olduğu bir mahkumun, eşini öldürdüğü gerekçesiyle asılmasını anlatıyor. Mahkumun suçunun ardındaki duygusal karmaşıklık ve pişmanlık anlatılırken, toplumun ve adalet sisteminin soğuk, merhametsiz yapısı harika işlenmiş.

Şiirin ana teması, insanların "sevdiği şeyleri" kendi elleriyle yok etmesi, yani tutkularının ve arzularının kurbanı olmaları diye düşünüyorum ben.

Eser, insani duygularla dolu olup, toplumsal adaleti ve insan doğasını sorguluyor. Ancak şunu da söylemek gerekir ki kasvetli bir hava hakim şiirde. Ona göre okumak lazım.

Ovo Lomovo izdanje pored poeme, sadrži i Belešku o baladi u Redinškoj tamnici u kojoj nam je objašnjeno kako se Vajld ovde našao, kao i njegovu kratku biografiju sa slikama i ilustracijom prave tamnice u Redingu. Zadržan je prevod koji je radio Erih Koš. Sjajno delo, sjajno izdanje. Moja preporuka.

u njoj leži nesrećni čovek

u gorućem pokrovu obavija ga tama.”

Esta edición tiene tres cartas que Wilde le escribio a su amado antes de entrar a prisión. Son tan llenas de vida y amor, tan rebosantes de esperanza por todo... luego viene esa balada. Es tan triste que no se que decir, simplemente es hermosamente triste.

I never knew Oscar Wilde wrote such moving poetries. Most of poetries in this book are tender and shows his faith in Jesus. "Ballad of Reading Gaol" is the best poem. This poem is about a condemned criminal when Wilde was in the prison. Wilde's compassion for the criminal is very touching. Criminal shoud be punished. But their dignity should be protected. This poem is Wilde's lament for the man who was hanged without mercy.
