Inspring and gives you a sense of what the culture is like in Louisiana for that time period if your into History and want to know why people think and do the things they do. Harsh but reality.
This book was recommended to me many years ago and I have finally picked it up. Sorry to have waited so long to get to it. Great book following the author's family roots with lots of pictures and official documents included. It starts in LA on a cotton plantation and follows the successive generations of Elizabeth the cook. It also involves miscegenation and its ramifications. This is a 4.5⭐ book for me.
This book followed one African-American family for four generations - from the 1840s to the 1930s. It was fascinating to read about how much life both changed and stayed the same for black people over that time period. The story was based on the author's ancestors and was really engaging.
