Carrying Jack’s ashes to spread on the sea becomes, for those close to him, an occasion to reminisce and reveal. As it did for William Faulkner in As I Lay Dying, this allows multiple viewpoints to intertwine and reveal the nuances of working men’s lives, this time in mid 20th century London.

What a beautifully written book, highlighting the best aspects of Swift's writing that I remember from Waterland. He always manages to capture emotion, longing, love and loss in a way that is poetic yet poignant, and makes the reader feel the same intense emotions that the characters in the novel go through.

This story is about 4 men who go on a trip to scatter the ashes of their friend, Jack, but as with any other Swift novel, there is much meandering through the personal histories of the 4 friends, which exposes many secrets, and allows for their regrets and emotions to surface. Another masterpiece by Swift.

Great writing and great story framing. Four men on a mission to carry out their dead friend's last wish to have his ashes scattered in the sea. Takes place in the 80's, so it feels a bit dated, but wait ten more years and it'll be nostalgic instead.
