My first book by this author. I enjoyed reading it. It is a older book of his. It had a good story to it. I liked the variety of characters in it. I hope to read more books by this author.

“Parte de los integrantes de una comuna hippie anclada en el pasado y dedicada a la producción ecológica de vino trata de hacer chantaje al Gobernador de California para evitar que el valle en el que viven se vea inundado por la construcción de una presa. Para ello idean un método para provocar terremotos por medio del conocimiento geológico y de un camión utilizado para prospecciones petrolíferas”.

Y esto es la novela. Está narrada desde el punto de vista-fundamentalmente- del líder de la comuna hippie, por lo que se encuadra en las novelas de Follet que toman el punto de vista del “malo”.
Inevitablemente se empatiza menos con el personaje que si fuese el bueno o la buena de la novela (que en este caso es una agente del FBI, guapa y lista of course).

No es la novela que yo recomendaría de Follet, pero si ya te has leído casi todo de él y te gusta el autor bueno, no está mal. Consigue, como siempre, que te enganches a la trama y estructura unos personajes atractivos que te ayudan a seguir avanzando.

Todo un poco previsible pero aceptable.

Nun soll aber das Tal einem Stausee weichen, was der Anführer der "Kinder von Eden", genannt "Priest", nicht zulassen kann. Er fasst einen wahnwitzigen Plan: er möchte ein Erdbeben auslösen und so die Regierung erpressen. Beim FBI nimmt zunächst keiner diese Drohung ernst. Als die Agentin Judy Maddox jedoch herausfindet, dass ein menschengemachtes Erdbeben durchaus möglich ist, beginnt eine gefährliche Jagd nach den Terroristen...

Ken Follett wartet einfach immer wieder mit richtig guten Ideen zu Büchern auf. Wer kommt bitte darauf, sich eine Terroristengruppe auszudenken, die damit droht, ein Erdbeben auszulösen? Ich fand die Geschichte sehr abgedreht und cool. Außerdem setzt sich Follett auch damit auseinander, was passiert, wenn der Mensch über die Natur gebieten darf.

Zwischendurch hat sich das Buch etwas gezogen und hatte einige Längen, gegen Ende wurde es aber immer besser und ich hab es mal wieder nicht aus der Hand legen können. Man merkt dem Buch natürlich an, dass es vor über 20 Jahren geschrieben wurde (auch was die Rollen von Männern und Frauen angeht - da musste ich schon öfter mal die Augen verdrehen und hab mich auch das ein oder andere mal geärgert), trotzdem war das Buch sehr spannend und behandelt eine außergewöhnliche Thematik.

Ken Follett hat mich also wieder einmal überrascht und überzeugt. Ich vergebe 4 / 5 ⭐.

Pojawiło się toto jako nowość Audioteki. Nie wiem, dlaczego dotrwałem do końca. Nie wiem, dlaczego ludzie chcą czytać takie książki. Nie wiem też dlaczego autorzy, którzy mają nieźle opanowany warsztat pisarski piszą takie badziewia. Szkoda papieru!

Uma história cujo ritmo aumenta de intensidade à medida que vamos lendo. O último terço do livro é viciante. Um bom policial, mesmo para mim que não aprecio muito este género.

Richard Granger, who goes by the name Priest, a former criminal hippie-like mastermind lives in his own commune cut off from the rest of the world. Priest has stolen a Seismic Vibrator, intending to use it for mass destruction when Priest's community is In peril by a plan to build a dam, Priest becomes an eco-terrorist, intending to use the seismic vibrator to blackmail the Governor of California into cancelling the project, otherwise he will use the seismic vibrator to cause earthquakes in the San Francisco bay until the Governor gives into his demands.

Highly decorated FBI Agent Judy Maddox knows the threat is real and the people of San Francisco are in danger, but her incompetent supervisor thinks it's all a hoax and is doing everything in his power to get her off the case, so Maddox goes deep undercover to hunt down a madman, with the help of Seismologist Michael Quercus, who becomes attracted to Agent Maddox.

Started out a bit slow but after the first hundred pages it really started to pick up. I did read a lot of negative reviews with this one, same as with The Third Twin, which I recently finished and also enjoyed, so I was a little hesitant, but I came back surprised. I liked the San Francisco setting and the story revolving around earthquakes, I had to look up a Seismic Vibrator to see if they were real or purely fictitious for the purpose of the story, and it turns out they do exist, I don't know if it's exactly like the one in the book but they are real.

Another "page-turner" from Ken Follett. The story is in the San Francisco Bay Area where a commune faces the loss of their leased land due to a planned hydro-electric dam. They turn to domestic terrorism by threatening to create an earthquake. Is that even possible? Definitely a compelling read with interesting characters.

Wow. Ken. I'm disappointed.

Ken Follett is one of my favorite authors, I loved the Pillars of the Earth series and the other one that starts out in WWI. I read them both super quickly and loved it. This book, however, is pretty horrifying.

The premise is that a group of ragtag former hippies lead by a Manson-like charismatic psychopath are fixed to destroy San Francisco with a seismic vibrator machine. Using this machine, they plan to deliberately cause an earthquake in an effort to pressure the Governor of California into stopping plans to flood their vineyard.

Even with an awful plot, it still finds time to have shitty predictable characters. I can't even dive into the way women are written in this book, because it was written about 25+ years ago and let's give someone the benefit of the doubt but good lord. Every woman in this book is a man's fantasy, in the first 30 pages the main characters are fucking in broad daylight against a car in view of lots of people. It truly does nothing for the plot or character development, trust me.

I am so disappointed. I recommend Ken Follett novels to everyone but I had no idea he was capable of puking out such utter garbage. I am so glad I just happened across this in a little library versus paying full thrift store price for it.

Stay clear of this book if you're a fan of fun, enjoyable thrillers, well-written female characters, and a cohesive plot.

Quando o governador do estado da Califórnia decide instalar uma central eléctrica no vale do Rio Silver, uma pequena comuna de velhos hippies que se encontra a viver naquele local decide encontrar todos os meios para impedir tal desastre ambiental.

Os Filhos do Éden assim se auto-denominam, presididos por Priest, nome utilizado por um cadastrado, juntamente com uma das suas companheiras, Star, decidem roubar um vibrador sísmico (máquina utilizada na indústria do petróleo para para explorar o subsolo), com o intuito de provocar um tremor de terra.

A intenção é divulgada num programa de rádio popular, mas inicialmente ninguém dá valor a que um grupo de alucinados decide dizer.

O que parece uma atitude de reivindicação por parte do grupo, que vive das colheitas para sobreviver, torna-se numa questão que vai para além de um ato de rebeldia. Priest decide ir por cima de tudo e de todos, mesmo que isso signifique a morte de alguns, para levar avante o seu intento. E quando uma das suas companheiras lhe diz que esse tremor de terra é possível, Priest decide avançar mesmo com o projeto.

What I really enjoyed but somewhat hated about this book is that it made me want both Judy and Priest to win. I think Priest truely did have good intentions in the beginning but he went totally haywire, but I liked that character greatly and wanted him to win when I read from his pov, but when I read from Judy's pov I wanted her to win, lol. Anyway Ken Follet has become one of my favourite authors because of the feel he always makes me feel towards the characters of his stories. They always bring about some kind of strong emotion.

Ο Κεν Φόλετ έχει αποδειχτεί μεγάλος συγγραφέας εδώ και πολλά χρόνια. Συνήθως διαβάζω ό,τι γράφει. Αυτήν τη φορά ασχολείται με ένα περίεργο θέμα: τους τεχνητούς σεισμούς ( αυτούς δηλαδή που μπορεί να προκαλέσει ο άνθρωπος). Ακούγεται σας συνωμοσιολογικό πλάνο αλλά δυστυχώς υπάρχουν και αυτοί. Αφότου τελείωσα το μυθιστόρημα έκανα μια μικρή έρευνα και ανακάλυψα ότι υπάρχουν τεσσάρων ειδών σεισμοί: α) οι εγκατακρημνισιγενείς ( αυτοί που προκαλούνται από πτώσεις σπηλαίων που βρίσκονται μέσα στον εσωτερικό φλοιό της γης. Αποτελούν μόνο το 3 τοις εκατό των σεισμών και είναι επιφανειακοί και σχεδόν ακίνδυνοι). β) οι ηφαιστειογενείς ( που ακολουθούν, συνοδεύουν ή προηγούνται της δράσης ενός ηφαιστείου. Αποτελούν το 7 τοις εκατό των σεισμών και σπάνια προκαλούν σοβαρές ζημιές). Γ) οι γνωστοί μας τεκτονικοί σεισμοί. Αποτελούν το 90 τοις εκατό των σεισμών και είναι οι πιο καταστροφικοί. Υπολογίζεται ότι γίνονται περίπου 1.000.000 ανά χρόνο αλλά αυτοί που γίνονται αντιληπτοί από τον άνθρωπο αγγίζουν τους 100.000 ανά χρόνο. Δ) οι τεχνικοί σεισμοί που μπορεί να προκληθούν από ανθρώπινες ενέργειες ( έκρηξη εκρηκτικών υλών, πυρηνικών υλών, κατασκευή μεγάλων υδατοφρακτών κλπ). Συνήθως είναι χαμηλής έντασης και δεν προξενούν μεγάλες βλάβες.
Έτσι λοιπόν, είναι δυνατοί αυτοί οι τελευταίοι σεισμοί! Στο μυθιστόρημά του ο Κεν Φόλετ μας διηγείται την ιστορία ενός χίπι που ζει σε ένα κοινόβιο κάπου σε μια ερημική τοποθεσία της Καλιφόρνια, μαζί με περίπου άλλα είκοσι άτομα. Ζουν από την παρασκευή κρασιών και καλλιεργούν αμπέλια, δεν είναι πουθενά καταχωρημένοι, δεν πληρώνουν φόρους, δεν έχουν ηλεκτρικό κλπ. Ο Κυβερνήτης της Καλιφόρνια αποφασίζει να κατασκευάσει κοντά στην περιοχή τους μια μονάδα ηλεκτρισμού, έτσι αυτοί θα πρέπει να εγκαταλείψουν το κοινόβιό τους και αφού δεν είναι ιδιοκτήτες της γης δεν δικαιούνται αποζημίωσης. Ο κακός ήρωας αποφασίζει να εκβιάσει τον Κυβερνήτη και απειλεί με πρόκληση σεισμών στην περιοχή για να αποτρέψει την ίδρυση της ηλεκτρικής μονάδας. Στο πλευρό του έχει μια οργισμένη γεωλόγο που τον βοηθάει. Και απέναντί του βρίσκεται η καλή ηρωίδα, πράκτορας του FBI μαζί με τον πρώην σύζυγο της γεωλόγου, γνωστό σεισμολόγο.
Κατά πόσον είναι εφικτά όντως αυτά τα σενάρια; Δεν έχω ιδέα. Είναι πάντως μια χορταστική περιπέτεια. Και ένα ωραίο παραμύθι. Για μένα ήταν και μια ευκαιρία να ψάξω λίγο το θέμα των σεισμών.
